PRESIDENT TINUBU MOURNS PASSING OF LEGENDARY MUSICIAN MIKE EJEAGHA

President Bola Tinubu has extended his heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fans of renowned musician Mike Ejeagha, who passed away on Friday at the age of 95. President Tinubu described Ejeagha as one of Nigeria’s greatest folklorists, songwriters, and musicians in the Igbo language. According to Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga the President’s message was conveyed in a statement on June 7, 2025. The President noted that Ejeagha’s music and distinctive storytelling style preserved and projected Igbo culture and customs, inspiring generations. “May the spirit and values of Gentleman Mike Ejeagha’s music continue to remind us that music has the power to revive, heal and redirect energy towards worthy causes that help build our nation,” President Tinubu said. Onanuga noted that President Tinubu also commended the Enugu State Government, led by Governor Peter Mbah, for honouring the music icon while he was still alive. The President prayed for the soul of the departed to rest in eternal peace and for comfort to be brought to those mourning his loss.

FIRST LADY OLUREMI TINUBU MOURNS VICTIMS OF NIGER STATE FLOODING

The First Lady of Nigeria, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has expressed her heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Niger State, Hon. According to the Minister, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), in collaboration with the Nigerian Armed Forces and the Niger State Government, is working tirelessly to bring help to those in need. BAYELSA GOVERNOR MOURNS FORMER MILITARY ADMINISTRATOR, CAPTAIN CALEB OLUBOLADE

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, has described the sudden demise of his predecessor, Navy Captain Caleb Olubolade, as shocking. Olubolade, who served as military administrator of the state from June 27, 1997, to July 9, 1998, died on Sunday, May 11, 2025, at the age of 70. In a statement signed by Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah, Governor Diri expressed profound sadness over Olubolade’s death, citing his indelible contributions to the development of Bayelsa during the state’s formative years. Daniel Alabrah said Governor Diri described Olubolade as selfless, an astute administrator, and a man of exceptional humility. Diri said, “His passing is a painful loss not just to Bayelsa, but to Nigeria. Captain Olubolade was a man of integrity, humility and vision.” The governor recalled that the state celebrated Olubolade’s 70th birthday in Yenagoa last year, and he was full of life at the event. Diri said Olubolade identified with the state through the years and was one of the key supporters of his administration. “He never distanced himself from the state. He was always a phone call away and gave us his full support,” Diri added. The state cabinet observed a minute’s silence in honour of the late former administrator. Daniel Alabrah said Diri extended the condolences of the government and people of the state to the Olubolade family and prayed God to grant them and his loved ones the fortitude to bear the loss.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has joined the Catholic faithful and Christians worldwide in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, describing him as a “humble servant of God, tireless champion of the poor, and guiding light for millions.” In a statement released by the Statehouse, Tinubu praised the late Pope’s dedication to serving the Church and humanity. “His Holiness served the Church and the Master of the Church until the end,” Tinubu said. “He stepped onto the global stage with a message of mercy, urging us to see the face of Christ in the marginalised, the refugees, the migrants, and the forgotten.” Tinubu highlighted Pope Francis’s role as an instrument of peace, who built bridges between faiths and advocated for the developing world. “He was a steadfast advocate for the developing world, where he consistently spoke against economic injustice and ceaselessly prayed for peace and stability in troubled regions,” he added. The President called on Nigerians to honour the late Pope’s legacy by lifting those who are down, healing communities, and defending human dignity. “Let us honour him not with words alone but with action: by lifting those who are down, healing our communities, and defending the dignity of every person,” he said. On behalf of the government and people of Nigeria, Tinubu extended condolences to the Catholic Church, the global Catholic community, and the Christian faithful, praying that God grants the late Pontiff eternal rest. “May God Almighty grant His beloved servant eternal rest,” he concluded.

NFF MOURNS DEATH OF 1980 AFCON WINNER CHARLES BASSEY JUST A DAY AFTER CHUKWU PASSED

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is deeply saddened by the death of Charles Bassey, a member of the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations-winning Green Eagles squad. Bassey passed away on Saturday at the age of 71 after a protracted illness in his native town of Eket, Akwa Ibom State. The NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, expressed the federation’s sadness over Bassey’s demise, which comes hours after the death of the team’s captain, Christian Chukwuemeka Chukwu. “This has been a day of double tragedy, and the NFF and the entire Nigeria football fraternity are deeply saddened by the turn of events,” Sanusi said. Bassey was part of the 22-man squad that made history by becoming Nigeria’s first Africa Cup of Nations champions in 1980. After his playing career, he went on to coach various clubs in Nigeria, including Calabar Rovers, Mobil Pegasus, BCC Lions, Flash Flamingoes, Akwa United, and Wikki Tourists. Bassey’s death brings to nine the number of members from the 1980 AFCON-winning squad who have passed away. VICE PRESIDENT KASHIM SHETTIMA MOURNS ENUGU TANKER EXPLOSION VICTIMS, CALLS FOR END TO TANKER ACCIDENTS

Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media & Communications, Stanley Nkwocha, disclosed that Vice President Kashim Shettima has commiserated with the people and government of Enugu over the fuel tanker fire that claimed lives following an accident in the state. The Vice President described the incident as a sad reminder of the need to put an end to avoidable tanker accidents and explosions. The fuel tanker had veered off course and burst into flames along the Ugwu-Onyeama section of the Enugu-Onitsha Expressway on Saturday. In a condolence message to families of those who lost their lives and the injured, Shettima noted that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is very concerned and disturbed by the incident and other tanker explosions in recent times. “It was with a heart full of sadness that I received news of the fuel tanker explosion that occurred on Saturday, January 25, 2025, in Ugwu Onyeama local government area of Enugu State. I am deeply saddened that another tanker accident would lead to the loss of lives of Nigerians, leaving others injured in the gory incident,” Shettima said. Shettima reassured Nigerians that the government will stop at nothing to put an end to tanker accidents on the roads, following President Tinubu’s directive. He promised that the government will engage relevant agencies, including the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), to urgently forestall further tanker accidents and explosions across the country. “I express my profound condolences to the government and people of Enugu State, particularly the families that lost their loved ones and those that are undergoing treatment for various degrees of injuries in the hospitals,” Shettima added. “While my thoughts and prayers are with you, I pray Almighty God to grant eternal rest to the souls of the departed and quick return to health for the injured.”

The Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, in a statement, announced that President Bola Tinubu has joined the government and people of Plateau State in mourning the passing of Lieutenant-General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), who died on Thursday at the age of 81. President Tinubu extended heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, military colleagues, and political associates of the former Governor of old Bendel State, Minister of Transport, and Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army. Onanuga stated that President Tinubu praised Useni’s military career, saying he “demonstrated courage and dedication throughout his military career and inspired many young officers to prioritise national interests above personal gain.” The President also acknowledged Useni’s contributions to politics, noting that he “made some difference in politics as deputy national chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District.” President Tinubu prayed that God Almighty will grant Lieutenant-General Useni’s soul eternal rest and solace for his family. FORMER FCT MINISTER JEREMIAH USENI PASSES AWAY AT 81

Nigeria’s former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Lieutenant General Jeremiah Timbut Useni, has died at the age of 81. Born on February 16, 1943, Useni was just shy of his 82nd birthday. According to family sources, he passed away on Thursday, January 23, 2025, after a prolonged illness. Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State described Useni’s demise as a tremendous loss to his family, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Plateau State, and the nation. “General Useni’s exemplary leadership and steadfast commitment to service left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s security and political landscape,” Mutfwang said. Useni had a distinguished career, serving Nigeria in various capacities, including as Minister of Transport, Quarter-Master General of the Nigerian Army, and Minister of the FCT. After retiring from the military, he transitioned into politics, becoming Deputy Chairman of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District in 2015 under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Mutfwang praised Useni’s life of selfless service, highlighting his contributions to the military, politics, and his community. “His legacy of compassion, kindness, generosity, and dedication to the well-being of others will endure in the lives of those he impacted,” Mutfwang said. The governor extended his deepest sympathies to the President, the Nigerian Armed Forces, Useni’s family, and all those mourning the loss of the distinguished elder statesman.
