NATIONAL YOUTH COUNCIL OF NIGERIA LOSES REGISTRATION CERTIFICATE FOLLOWING 18-YEAR LEADERSHIP CRISIS

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) has faced a major setback as the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) withdrew its registration certificate issued on October 28, 2020, according to an official communication dated October 6, 2025. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development confirmed receipt of the CAC notification, highlighting prolonged governance turmoil besetting the youth organization. CAC’s action stems from Sections 8(1)(c) and 8(1)(d) of the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, citing findings of serial violations of NYCN’s Constitution and CAMA provisions, notably Sections 833 and 834, following an extensive probe into the Council’s protracted 18-year leadership crisis. Consequent to the withdrawal, CAC annulled recognition of NYCN’s existing leadership claims and appointed an Interim Management Committee (IMC) to steer the organization for one year starting October 6, 2025. “The Commission has constituted an Interim Management Committee to oversee and manage the affairs of the Council for a period of one year,” CAC stated. The Federal Ministry of Youth Development, NYCN’s supervisory authority, acknowledged CAC’s statutory mandate. “We take due cognizance of this development and acknowledge the legal authority of the Corporate Affairs Commission under CAMA 2020,” the Ministry affirmed, calling on stakeholders to collaborate with the IMC. According to the Ministry, the move seeks restoration of NYCN’s unity and institutional credibility aligning with founding objectives. “This exercise is aimed at restoring unity, legitimacy, and institutional integrity to the NYCN, in line with its founding ideals,” the statement emphasized. Observers note the regulatory intervention underscores CAC’s enforcement of corporate governance standards amid hopes the IMC will refocus NYCN on youth empowerment pivotal to Nigeria’s development aspirations.
