OPINION: A NEW DAWN FOR NEW DELTA AND ANIOMA STATEHOOD – Senator Ned Nwoko

With your courageous defection to the All Progressives Congress, a significant chapter in our nation’s political history is being rewritten. This moment is not just about shifting allegiances, it is about the bold possibilities now within reach. For the first time in decades, we have a real chance to restructure Nigeria’s federating units through constitutionally backed reforms that serve justice, equity, and true federalism. As Governor of Delta State, leading the charge among five PDP governors now aligning with the APC, you have stepped into a party reenergized and focused, a party that has already begun laying the groundwork for bold constitutional amendments. Chief among these is the creation of two new viable states: Anioma and New Delta. Let me remind you, this agenda was declared a done deal by the party leadership long before your defection, a testament to the APC’s commitment to correcting historical imbalances and ending regional marginalization. It now behoves on you to rise to this historic moment. The past must not be carried into the future. As scripture warns, “No one pours new wine into old wineskins.” Old habits, old politics, and the old deals that led to the gradual decline of the PDP in Delta must be left behind. Your defection must not be symbolic, it must be transformative. This is your opportunity to embrace a new sense of purpose and demonstrate renewed dedication to progressive governance, fairness, and inclusive development. It is time to write the wrongs of the past. Why This Moment Matters The creation of Anioma State will finally give voice, identity, and institutional power to the aspirations of Delta North. It is a long overdue recognition of a people who have sought parity with their kinsmen. The proposed New Delta will address the deep internal asymmetries within the current Delta State structure. It will empower neglected communities, bring government closer to the people, and unlock new paths for economic growth. For the first time, the APC is armed with the numbers to amend the constitution. This time, we can fulfill these promises without demanding painful tradeoffs from the South. We are not lobbying from a place of weakness, we are standing firmly in a position of strength. These changes are more than political. They are economic necessities. They are about focused governance, better infrastructure, increased federal allocation, and grassroots democracy. Two new states will mean two new engines of development. Realignment Must Mean Responsibility This is the golden hour for the South, and especially for Delta. Your move to the APC must be anchored in vision. Embrace the party’s progressive agenda. Lead the charge for constitutional reform. Leave behind the politics of survival and step into the politics of legacy. Your decision to align with the President and the Renewed Hope Agenda will ensure that New Delta State, and Anioma is not left behind , but instead benefits immensely from the vast opportunities available at the centre. Let us move forward, not cautiously, but courageously, with clarity and conviction. Thank you. Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko, Senator Representing Delta North, Chairman, Senate Adhoc Committee on Crude Oil Theft.

DELTA STATE GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI DEFECTS TO APC ALONG WITH PDP STRUCTURE

The Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, and the entire Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) structure in the state have defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The defection, which was announced by pioneer PDP state chairman, James Manager, marks the end of the PDP’s 26-year dominance in the oil-rich South-south state. Manager cited the PDP’s national leadership crisis and its weakened position with only 11 governors as reasons for the move. “The party’s instability and recent resolutions against coalitions diminished its electoral prospects,” he said. The defection is attributed to local political challenges, including Oborevwori’s strained relationship with former Governor James Ibori, who opposed him in the 2022 PDP primary. The influence of President Bola Tinubu’s allies, such as Government Ekpemupolo (Tompolo), and the death of Ijaw leader Edwin Clark, further weakened Oborevwori’s position in the PDP. The PDP’s declining popularity in Delta State, evident in its 2023 election losses, including the presidential vote to the Labour Party, also contributed to the defection. Additionally, the ongoing EFCC investigation of former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa may have incentivized the move, with hopes of leniency under APC membership. Senator Ned Nwoko, a recent APC defector, welcomed the new members, promising collaboration. While the APC may not guarantee popularity in Delta, it offers Oborevwori federal government support and protection from local adversaries, securing his political survival amid a turbulent PDP landscape.

SENATOR PRINCE NED NWOKO TAKES STAND AGAINST FAKE NEWS AND MISINFORMATION

The Office of Senator Prince Ned Munir Nwoko has issued a stern warning against the spread of fake news and misinformation using the senator’s name. In a statement, the office declared that the era of fabricating unfounded stories to mislead the public and gain traction online at Senator Nwoko’s expense is over. The Director, Communications, Hon. Gloria Okolugbo, in a statement, emphasized that Senator Nwoko is a distinguished public servant fully engaged with critical national development issues that demand his attention. Okolugbo stated that the office will no longer tolerate the reckless and desperate antics of those who seek to exploit Senator Nwoko’s name for clout and engagement. Gloria Okolugbo warned that the office’s legal team, working with media professionals, is monitoring and identifying sources of misinformation. The statement advised individuals and platforms that have peddled falsehoods about Senator Nwoko to immediately retract and take down such content. Gloria Okolugbo emphasized that this statement serves as an official notice of their intent to take decisive legal action against any entity or individual found guilty of spreading falsehoods. “Let it be known that laws exist to protect against defamation and misinformation, and those who disregard them will face the full weight of legal consequences,” Okolugbo said. This move comes after recent rumors about Senator Nwoko’s personal life were debunked by his office, with his team calling the rumors “false and maliciously crafted”.

SENATOR NWOKO PROPOSES BILL TO BAN DAYTIME MOVEMENT OF HEAVY-DUTY VEHICLES

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, has introduced a bill seeking to ban the daytime movement of heavy-duty vehicles across Nigeria. The proposed law, presented during plenary on Tuesday, February 11, aims to reduce road accidents, ease traffic congestion, and enhance public safety. Statistics have revealed that between 2015 and 2018, articulated lorries, tankers, and trailers were linked to 3,200 deaths and over ₦39 billion in economic losses. Senator Nwoko emphasized that preventable crashes must not continue, stressing that restricting these vehicles to midnight – 6:00 am will save lives and prevent economic disruptions. In addition to the bill, Nwoko is advocating for the creation of Truck Transit Parks, designated rest areas where truck drivers can park safely, get proper rest, and reduce fatigue-induced crashes. These facilities, he explains, will help curb reckless driving, road obstructions, and indiscriminate parking, which often lead to fatal accidents. Senator Nwoko stated, “It’s time to take decisive action to protect our communities and save lives.” He urged public and legislative support for the bill, emphasizing that it is a crucial step towards ensuring road safety and preventing unnecessary losses. In a related development, Senator Nwoko’s recent defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressive Congress (APC) has been attributed to years of deliberate sabotage and exclusion within the Delta State PDP. According to his Media Assistant, Juliet Ify Ugah, Nwoko’s decision to defect was not driven by personal ambition but by a desire to deliver real development to Delta North.

SENATE TAKES ACTION AGAINST CRUDE OIL THEFT, APPOINTS NWOKO AS COMMITTEE CHAIR

In a bid to tackle the menace of crude oil theft in Nigeria, the Senate has established an ad hoc committee to investigate the issue. Senator Ned Munir Nwoko, representing Delta North Senatorial District, has been appointed as the chairman of the committee. The committee’s formation is a direct response to a motion sponsored by Senator Nwoko in July 2023, which highlighted the need to investigate the incessant and nefarious acts of crude oil theft in the Niger Delta. The motion also sought to identify the actors involved in the theft. As part of its mandate, the committee will investigate the involvement of security forces, militia groups, local communities, and oil company employees in crude oil theft. The committee will also recommend measures to enhance surveillance and safeguard oil installations. In a related development, the Senate has begun considering a bill that seeks to restrict the movement of articulated lorries, tankers, and trailers during daytime hours nationwide. The proposed legislation aims to reduce the risk of accidents and improve road safety. If passed into law, the bill will prohibit the movement of these vehicles between 6:00 am and 12:00 midnight, except in emergency situations. The restriction is expected to reduce congestion on the roads and minimize the risk of accidents.

DELTA PDP TO SUE SENATOR NED NWOKO OVER DEFECTION TO APC

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State has resolved to take legal action against Senator Ned Nwoko for defecting to the All Progressives Congress (APC). This decision was reached by elected and appointed political office holders from the Delta North senatorial district, which Nwoko represents in the senate. The resolution was the outcome of a meeting convened and presided over by Deputy Governor Sir Monday Onyeme. Onyeme emphasized the importance of maintaining the PDP’s dominance in the Delta North senatorial district. “Delta North should remain a PDP-dominant senatorial district. We must consolidate our position as the main determinant for all elections in Delta State,” he said. Onyeme also advised local government council chairmen to connect with the grassroots by implementing projects that complement Governor Oborevwori’s More Agenda, which aims to add value to the lives of the people. The PDP’s decision to sue Nwoko is a clear indication of the party’s determination to protect its interests and maintain its stronghold in the region.

WARD 8 PDP CHAIRMAN CLAIMS DELTA STATE GOVERNMENT COMPELLED HIM TO CRITICIZE SENATOR NWOKO’S DEFECTION

Clement Chiazor, the Ward 8 Chairman of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Aniocha North LGA, has alleged that he was forced by the Delta State Government to issue a statement condemning Senator Ned Nwoko’s defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC). According to Chiazor, his statement was “nothing but a product of coercion” and that the Delta State Government was desperate to control the fallout of Senator Nwoko’s exit. Chiazor’s initial statement had criticized Senator Nwoko’s decision to leave the PDP, but he has now revealed that he was compelled to do so. In a statement released by Michael Ogar, Senator Nwoko’s media consultant, Chiazor explained that the government’s actions were a desperate attempt to save face. “If the PDP in Delta State had the confidence of its members, it would not need to force anyone to attack Senator Nwoko,” the statement read. The statement also highlighted Senator Nwoko’s reasons for leaving the PDP, citing the party’s internal divisions, lack of direction, and failure to meet the aspirations of its members and constituents. “Senator Nwoko remains focused on serving the people of Delta North and Nigeria at large. His move to the APC is driven by a desire to contribute to national development under a platform that values progress and inclusivity,” the statement declared. The people of Delta North have expressed their support for Senator Nwoko, stating that they are not deceived by the tactics employed by the government. They stand with Senator Nwoko in his quest for better governance and a brighter future.

SENATOR NWOKO CALLS FOR GREATER REGIONAL INTEGRATION AND COOPERATION IN INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT

Senator Ned Nwoko has reiterated his commitment to regional development, emphasizing the need for greater integration and cooperation in infrastructure and resource management. He made this call during a visit by the Managing Director of the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority, Mr. Femi Adekanbi. Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, stressed the importance of strategic projects to boost agriculture, irrigation, and water supply across Delta North, Edo, Ondo, and Ekiti states. He specifically advocated for the completion of two critical dam projects in Delta State: the Ogwashi-Uku Dam and the Idumuje-Ugboko Dam. “These dams, when completed, will transform the region. The Ogwashi-Uku Dam will provide vital water resources to over 60 communities, enhancing agriculture, irrigation, and water supply,” Nwoko said. “Similarly, the Idumuje-Ugboko Dam will improve irrigation, expand access to clean water, and drive socio-economic growth.” Nwoko commended BORBDA’s leadership for its ongoing efforts and pledged to secure adequate funding for the projects. Mr. Adekanbi, BORBDA’s Managing Director, assured Nwoko of the authority’s commitment to completing the projects and expressed gratitude for his relentless advocacy for Delta North’s development.

SENATOR NED NWOKO DUMPS PDP FOR APC TO PURSUE ANIOMA STATE CREATION

Senator Ned Nwoko, representing Delta North, has announced plans to leave the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) in pursuit of his long-held goal of creating Anioma State. According to sources, Nwoko convened a crucial consultative meeting with notable PDP members and stakeholders from opposition parties across his constituency to inform them of his decision. The meeting, which lasted for hours, was held at Nwoko’s country home in Idumuji-kpoko, Aniocha North. Victor Sorokwu, convener and leader of Ugo-Anioma, confirmed the development, stating that Nwoko sought their support to dump the PDP, which was unanimously agreed upon by all attendees. Sorokwu emphasized that Nwoko’s defection is aimed at actualizing the creation of Anioma State, rather than furthering his alleged 2027 governorship ambitions. “Nwoko had called for the meeting to solicit their support to dump PDP, which was unanimously agreed to by all and sundry who attended the meeting,” Sorokwu said. If Nwoko’s defection is successful, all three Delta State Senators in the National Assembly will belong to the ruling APC, potentially weakening the PDP’s stronghold in the state since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999. This development comes on the heels of Erhiatake Ibori-Suenu, daughter of former governor James Ibori, defecting from the PDP to the APC.

EK CLARK DEFENDS DELTA GOVERNOR SHERIFF OBOREVWORI, CALLS FOR EQUITABLE DEVELOPMENT IN DELTA STATE

Prominent Ijaw leader and elder statesman, Chief (Dr.) E.K. Clark, has defended Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori amidst criticism from Senator Ned Nwoko. In an open letter, Clark applauded Oborevwori’s developmental achievements and urged him to address the neglect of Ijaw communities. Clark pointed to the ongoing transformation of Warri and other areas, including three flyovers, a cloverleaf, and road expansions worth ₦78 billion. “Warri is reclaiming its position as a commercial hub,” Clark noted. He also commended Oborevwori’s financial management, which has seen over ₦300 billion in inherited debt cleared within months. Dismissing Senator Nwoko’s accusations of underperformance, Clark described them as unfounded. “Governor Oborevwori has prioritized the people’s welfare over political patronage. I challenge Senator Nwoko to substantiate his claims,” he stated. While praising the administration, Clark emphasized the need to address long-standing inequalities in Ijaw areas. He called for the completion of key projects, the establishment of a tertiary institution in Ijaw territories, and the upgrading of the Burutu Maritime Academy to a university. “Ijaw communities remain sidelined, with only the Kpakiama Bomodi Bridge to show for decades of governance. This disparity must be rectified,” Clark asserted. He expressed optimism in Oborevwori’s ability to drive lasting development across Delta State, urging him to remain undeterred by distractions. “Governor Oborevwori is enhancing democracy and development in Delta State. He should continue his good work with determination and fairness,” Clark concluded.
