NIGERIA TO EXPERIENCE MIXED WEATHER CONDITIONS

A recent forecast by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) indicates that various parts of the country will witness a combination of sunny, cloudy, and rainy weather conditions from June 24 to June 26. In the northern region, mornings are expected to be sunny with scattered clouds, but thunderstorms and moderate rainfall may occur in areas such as Taraba, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Adamawa, Kebbi, and Kaduna. The central region will likely experience clear skies with some clouds in the mornings, followed by thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in places like Plateau, Benue, Abuja, Kwara, Nasarawa, and Niger. Southern states will see cloudy conditions in the mornings, with rain expected in Akwa Ibom and other areas, including Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Oyo, Delta, Ekiti, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom. NiMet has issued warnings for strong winds and thunderstorms, advising the public to take necessary precautions, such as securing loose items, disconnecting electronics during storms, avoiding tall trees, and staying indoors during heavy rainfall. The agency also recommends that travelers and airline operators stay updated with detailed weather reports through its official platforms to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.

MOKWA FLOODING DISASTER IS A GLOBAL PHENOMENON THAT IS TREATED WITH LOCAL SOLUTIONS

Climate change, global warming, rising temperatures are existential global threats that affect the world disproportionately despite who is pumping the largest amount of carbon emissions into the atmosphere. The Mokwa flooding that has so far claimed almost 200 avoidable deaths solutions should not stop at the usual extension of humanitarian assistance to the victims but approximate the desired risk analysis and research to avoid similar experience. As NIMET again predicted 3 days of rain and thunderstorms, I wonder if their entire predictions index the dire health of the world glaciers that has lost almost 40% of their total mass and is already doomed. The sad reality is such that even if temperatures stop rising immediately, a new study has found the doom will not stop.Consequently, it is essential that NIMET with the right of passage for predictions of weather conditions need to approximate researchers estimate that glaciers will eventually lose 39% of their mass relative to 2020 situation. This will be highly incidental to the more than 310 dams and surrounding communities who do not understand the philosophy and theories of NIMET predictions. What they so desire is for the moment of disaster not to meet them helplessly. In my honest opinion, Nigerians will thank response agencies for the lives they saved than for the humanitarian assistance delivered after each disaster cycles. NIMET need to be concerned that this trend of massive flooding is already irreversible particularly around the Sahel and Equator because almost every meeting on climate change in the world today have lobbyists from fossil fuel companies sending hundreds to global talks meant to reduce carbon emissions and plastic pollution as they make huge profits from the conversation of fossil fuels to plastics. No matter what comes next in action against climate change and global warming in the world, 40% glacier melting will likely contribute a 113 mm rise to global sea level. A situation that will worsen the flooding in countries like Nigeria with 2 major rivers of the world; Niger and Benue and 340 dams. Therefore, the response agencies need to be conscious that the loss of the glaciers will rise to 76% if the world continues its current climate policies which will likely fail to keep global warming under 1.5▪︎c according to a paper published in the Journal of Science. This is because polluters make billions turning oil into plastics and will do everything possible to weaken the rules. Nigeria need to brace up for more flooding disasters since Polluters are writing our climate rules. AIRPEACE SUSPENDS FLIGHT OPERATIONS DUE TO NIMET STRIKE

Air Peace has announced the suspension of all flight operations nationwide due to the ongoing strike by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMET). The decision was made in a statement signed by the head of corporate communications, Air Peace, Ejike Ndiulo. According to Ndiulo, the suspension is necessary because NiMET is responsible for issuing critical weather reports that ensure safe landings, particularly during the current season of heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. “Without these reports from the control tower, flight safety could not be guaranteed,” he explained. As a safety-first airline, Air Peace has chosen to act responsibly by suspending operations until NiMET resumes full service. “We understand this may cause inconvenience, and we sincerely apologise,” Ndiulo said. “Passengers will be contacted with updates and options for rescheduling.” The strike by NiMET staff commenced on Tuesday over demands related to conditions of service and other issues. Air Peace’s decision aims to prioritize passenger safety amid the disruption caused by the strike.

AVIATION MINISTRY PERM SEC KANA VISITS NIMET, PLEDGES MORE GOVERNMENT SUPPORT

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, paid a visit to the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Friday, January 10, 2025. During the visit, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, briefed Dr. Kana on the agency’s operations and its relationship with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Prof. Anosike highlighted NiMet’s strong relationships with various government ministries, including the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Blue Economy. He explained that these ministries rely on NiMet’s weather forecasts for various operations. Dr. Kana expressed his appreciation for the services NiMet provides towards the socio-economic development of the nation. He praised Prof. Anosike, the management team, and the staff of NiMet for their hard work and encouraged them to continue striving for excellence. “I appreciate the strong relationship existing between NiMet and other government ministries and agencies. I call for even stronger and better relationships between the heads of the agencies. I will work with the Honourable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Mr. Festus Keyamo SAN, to see that NiMet receives more government support,” Dr. Kana promised. As part of the visit, Prof. Anosike took Dr. Kana on a tour of NiMet’s facilities, including the new digital weather broadcasting studio.
