REMO STARS MAKE HISTORY AS NPFL CHAMPIONS

Remo Stars have emerged champions of the 2024/25 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season after a thrilling 1-0 victory over Niger Tornadoes at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne on Sunday. Olamilekan Adedayo scored the decisive goal six minutes from time, securing a maiden NPFL title for Daniel Ogunmodede’s side. With this win, Remo Stars made history as the first privately owned club to win the title since Udoji United achieved the feat in 1996. The Ikenne-based club also became the first South West team to claim the title in two decades, following the now-defunct Julius Berger’s victory. Remo Stars finished atop the standings with 68 points from 35 matches, ahead of second-placed Rivers United, who accumulated 58 points from the same number of games. This historic achievement marks a significant milestone for Remo Stars and their fans.

NPFL LAUNCHES INVESTIGATION INTO LOBI STARS MATCH-FIXING ALLEGATIONS

The Nigeria Premier Football League board has initiated an investigation into allegations of match-fixing and betting involving Lobi Stars, a relegation-threatened side and former league champions. Lobi Stars media officer Emmanuel Ujah accused the team’s players of match-fixing during an interview with Today 95.1FM Port Harcourt, expressing frustration with the club’s current league position. Ujah claimed that some players have been betting on games, specifically with Bet9ja, and fixing matches. “They have been betting at Bet9ja, fixing matches… They’ll ask people to bet that they’re scoring us two goals today, so go and bet,” Ujah said. He also alleged that even former player Daniel Amokachi had mentioned betting by players and officials in a meeting. However, one of the club’s players dismissed the allegations as baseless, blaming the team’s poor performance on management infighting. “Does he think the players are happy to go to the field and lose? They should check themselves. All these problems started when they began fighting over positions at the club,” the player said, requesting anonymity. NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi confirmed the investigation, stating, “We don’t want to give credence or credibility to those utterances without evidence, so we will invite the person who granted that interview.” The league has put structures in place to detect such activities and will conduct an internal inquest to get to the bottom of the issue. Lobi Stars have not won a match in 14 games, with their last victory dating back to December 14, when they beat Plateau United 1-0. They currently sit at the bottom of the table with 24 points after 31 games, struggling with coaching and facility issues. The team has had five coaches this season and has switched bases from Lafia to Bauchi and now Enugu.

RANGERS FC SECURE 3-0 VICTORY OVER KWARA UNITED FC

Rangers International FC’s goalkeeper, Lucky Jimoh Abdullahi, has taken the lead in the race for the most clean sheets this season, with 14 to his name. The shot-stopper secured his 14th clean sheet in his side’s 3-0 victory over Kwara United FC. The match, played at Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, started at a high tempo despite the challenging high-altitude conditions. The home team took the lead within two minutes when Chidiebere Okolie dribbled past the goalkeeper, sending the stadium into celebration. The Flying Antelopes doubled their lead in the 29th minute through a swift counter-attack led by Saviour Isaac, who finished the move himself. Rangers continued their dominant display after the break and were rewarded in the 60th minute when Godwin Uwumiro capitalized on a defensive mix-up to make it 3-0. The victory moved Rangers to third place, strengthening their chances of qualifying for CAF competitions. In his post-match interview, Rangers’ head coach, Kenechukwu Ekene, praised his team’s performance. “Today, we played well, and it was a good result. Against Akwa United, we tried to get three points but couldn’t. Today, we got the win,” he said. Kwara United coach, Tunde Sani, blamed the defeat on his players’ costly errors. “They made too many mistakes, especially my most trusted players,” he said.
