PRESIDENT TINUBU MOURNS PASSING OF AWUJALE OF IJEBULAND, OBA SIKIRU KAYODE ADETONA

President Bola Tinubu has condoled with the family, government, and people of Ogun State over the passing of the Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who died on Sunday at the age of 91. The monarch, who reigned for over 65 years, was known for his exemplary leadership and contributions to national unity. In a statement, President Tinubu described Oba Adetona’s death as a significant loss, saying it coincided with the passing of his predecessor, President Muhammadu Buhari, which made the news even more painful. “The demise of Oba Adetona has left an enormous void within the traditional institutions in Yorubaland and Nigeria in general,” Tinubu said. The President praised Oba Adetona as a “towering natural ruler who served his people with dignity, panache, class, and an unmistakable sense of duty.” He noted that during his remarkable reign, Oba Adetona provided uncompromising leadership to his people and advanced the cause of progress and national unity. Tinubu, who had an excellent personal relationship with the late monarch, described him as “an honest arbiter, confidante, and reliable leader without any guile.” He also commended Oba Adetona’s investments in education and research, particularly through the School of Postgraduate and Research Studies in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye. As the nation mourns Oba Adetona’s passing, President Tinubu extended his condolences to the family, Governor Dapo Abiodun, the government, and the people of Ogun State, and sons and daughters of Ijebuland. “May our departed Kabiyesi find eternal rest, and may we be comforted by his legacy of outstanding service,” he said.

AWUJALE OF IJEBULAND, OBA SIKIRU KAYODE ADETONA, DIES AT 91

The revered monarch, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, has passed away at the age of 91. The monarch died on Sunday, hours after the announcement of the death of his longtime friend and former President, Muhammadu Buhari. Oba Adetona, who ascended the throne on April 2, 1960, reigned for over 64 years, making him one of the longest-serving traditional rulers in Nigerian history. Born on May 10, 1934, he was a member of the House of Anikinaiya and was installed as king at a relatively young age. The monarch’s death comes as a shock to his subjects and the wider Nigerian community. Until his demise, Oba Adetona served as a symbol of unity and stability in the Ijebu Kingdom, a traditional state in Nigeria. The timing of his death is particularly poignant, given that it occurred just hours after the announcement of the passing of his long-time friend, Muhammadu Buhari, who died in a clinic in London, United Kingdom, after battling illness for some time.
