DELTA STATE GOVERNOR TERMINATES ROAD CONTRACTS AWARDED UNDER OKOWA’S ADMINISTRATION

Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has terminated multiple road construction contracts awarded during the twilight of his predecessor and political godfather’s administration, Mr. Ifeanyi Okowa. The decision affects several ongoing and stalled road projects across the state, many of which were awarded in the final months of Okowa’s administration. According to Oborevwori, the contracts were terminated due to delays and drastic cost escalation caused by rising inflation and the ripple effects of the fuel subsidy removal policy announced in May 2023. Some of the affected projects include the construction of a road in Abayaragba, Ndokwa West, Moweh Street in Ekiugbo, and the Ughelli Patani Expressway. “We have approved the repudiation of a number of other projects with a view to enabling us to proceed with some of those jobs,” Oborevwori said. The governor explained that repudiating the contracts would allow for proper analysis of the contractor’s capacity, possible adjustments in the scope of work, and the actual condition of the road in question. State Commissioner for Works, Charles Aniagwu, attributed the repudiation to the significant changes in economic conditions, citing the example of a bag of cement that may have been priced at ₦3,000 when the contract was awarded but would cost more when the contractor mobilized. “If a contractor is unable to proceed due to these changes and we didn’t have time to formally review the contract, then the only option left is to repudiate and reassess based on current realities,” Aniagwu explained. The terminated contracts reportedly include multi-billion-naira road developments in Delta North, South, and Central senatorial zones. Oborevwori’s decision marks a significant political pivot, given his previous association with Okowa, his predecessor and political godfather. Oborevwori emphasized that repudiating a contract doesn’t necessarily mean termination but rather a necessary step to reevaluate the project’s feasibility. “If a job is awarded for reconstruction and overlay of an existing road, you must consider how much that road has further deteriorated since the initial assessment,” he said.

MASSIVE DEFECTION ROCKS DELTA STATE AS GOVERNOR AND EX-GOVERNOR DUMP PDP FOR APC

In an unprecedented move, Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). The announcement was made on Wednesday in Asaba, the Delta State capital, by Senator James Manager, shortly after a meeting that lasted over six hours at Government House, Asaba. Manager stated, “All PDP members in the state, including the governor, former Governor Okowa, the Speaker, the state party chairman, all the local government chairmen and others, have agreed to move to the APC. We cannot continue to be in a sinking boat,” he said. The Delta State Commissioner for Information, Mr. Aniagwu Charles, officially confirmed the governor’s defection and the collective decision of Delta PDP leaders and stakeholders to join the APC. This development marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape, with potential implications for the 2027 general elections. The Governor’s Chief Press Secretary had earlier hinted at the decision, saying it was reached after “wide consultations with political stakeholders and in the interest of Delta’s long-term development”. The mass defection from PDP to APC is seen as a strategic realignment that could reshape the state’s politics.

FORMER DELTA STATE GOVERNOR, IFEANYI OKOWA, UNDER PRESSURE OVER ALLEGED N1.3TRILLION FRAUD

Former Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, is reportedly seeking a soft landing from President Bola Tinubu amidst allegations of defrauding the state to the tune of over N1.3 trillion during his eight-year tenure. According to investigative journalist Jackson Ude, Okowa’s woes began when Eddy Ogidi-Gbegbaje, a former permanent secretary at the Delta State Government House, confessed to withdrawing N87 billion in cash from a bank on Okowa’s orders. Although Gbegbaje avoided directly implicating Okowa, investigators allegedly uncovered that the huge sums ended up with the former governor. “Okowa is currently considering going to Accra, Ghana, in an attempt to lobby President Bola Tinubu for soft landing,” Ude said. However, Okowa’s plans may be hindered by the fact that his international passport is being held by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC). Gbegbaje has been in detention at the EFCC facility in Port Harcourt for over a month. Meanwhile, attempts to reach him for comment have been unsuccessful. President Tinubu is scheduled to attend the inauguration of President-Elect John Mahama in Accra, Ghana, where Okowa may attempt to lobby for a soft landing.
