GOV OKPEBHOLO PROMISES BETTER WELFARE PACKAGE FOR EDO WORKERS

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has promised to take care of Edo State civil servants and make them happy. The Governor made this promise on Friday when he received executives of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Edo State chapter, led by its Acting State Chairman, Comrade Bernard Egwekhide. Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, disclosed this in a statement. Fred Itua said the NLC executives visited the Governor to congratulate him on his recent victory at the governorship election tribunal that affirmed his victory in the September 21, 2024 governorship election. Governor Okpebholo said his administration’s actions favoring Edo workers are because it is worker-friendly. “Whatever we are doing, which is favouring Edo workers, is done because it is our responsibility as a government. Edo people voted for us to work for them, and that is what we are doing to ensure life is made better for our people, including the workers,” he said. The Governor emphasized transparency in his administration’s actions, saying, “We embrace transparency in all what we do as a government to enable the people to trust us as we are not afraid of criticism. Positive criticism will put us on our toes to work harder for Edo people.” Okpebholo also highlighted the importance of collaboration among the three tiers of government. Fred Itua further stated that the Governor received the new branch controller, Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Edo State, Apanke Utande, who was on a courtesy visit to Government House. During the meeting, Okpebholo urged Utande to collaborate with his administration to improve the lives of Edo people. Comrade Egwekhide commended the Governor for his developmental strides and friendly environment created for Edo State workers. “Workers in Edo State are proud of you for the developmental strides in the State. You have created a friendly relationship between your administration and Edo workers,” Egwekhide stated. Egwekhide highlighted some of the Governor’s achievements, including paying workers their 13th month salary, raising Ambrose Ali University’s subvention from N41 million to N500 million, regularizing casual workers, and increasing pensioners’ monthly allocation from N50 million to N1 billion. “We thank the governor for several employment given to our people in the very short time in office,” Egwekhide added. Fred Itua noted that a committee has been set up to review the compulsory pension scheme, which has been a burden on retired civil servants. The report will be submitted to the Governor for action. Fred Itua’s statement concluded by emphasizing the Governor’s commitment to the welfare of Edo State workers.

The Federal Government, in collaboration with the Edo State Government, has established a fact-finding committee to investigate the recent killings of hunters in Uromi, Edo State. This was disclosed by Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, on Thursday, April 10, 2025, when he received a high-powered delegation from Kano State led by Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo at the Government House in Benin City. Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, stated that Governor Okpebholo revealed the committee’s formation to address the incident. Fred Itua noted that the Governor emphasized President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s dissatisfaction with the incident and his determination to ensure the state and nation are safe for everyone. “The President personally wants to see to the end of this issue,” Governor Okpebholo said. Fred Itua further explained that the committee aims to identify the remote causes of the incident and implement lasting solutions. The delegation from Kano State, led by Comrade Gwarzo, expressed gratitude to Governor Okpebholo for his earlier visit to Kano and appreciated the peaceful steps he took regarding the Uromi incident. They submitted a report detailing their findings, including the names, numbers, next of kin, and survivors of the attack. “Sixteen persons lost their dear lives from five local government areas of Kano State,” Gwarzo explained. Fred Itua confirmed that this report will aid the committee’s investigation. Governor Okpebholo assured the delegation that justice will be served and emphasized the need for transparency in the process. The committee’s findings will be made public to ensure accountability. The incident has sparked concerns about security and inter-state relations, with both governments committed to addressing the issue and ensuring the safety of all citizens. Present during the visit were Deputy Governor of Edo State, Hon. Dennis Idahosa; Speaker Edo State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon Blessing Agbebaku; security heads; and senior government officials from both states. The Governor and the Kano delegation also met with members of the Hausa community in Uromi. Fred Itua signed the statement, highlighting the governments’ commitment to resolving the issue.

GOVERNOR OKPEBHOLO LAUNCHES 2027 RE-ELECTION CAMPAIGN FOR PRESIDENT TINUBU IN EDO STATE

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has announced the commencement of campaigns for the re-election of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election. The disclosure was made in a statement by Chief Press Secretary Fred Itua, following the defection of Uhunmwonde State Constituency lawmaker, Hon. Kaycee Osamwonyi, from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). Itua reported that Governor Okpebholo received Osamwonyi, a member of the Edo State House of Assembly Committee on Budget and Appropriation, at the Government House in Benin City on Wednesday. The lawmaker was presented to the governor by APC Edo State Chairman Jarrett Tenebe, who described the defection as a testament to the ruling party’s growing influence. The governor commended Osamwonyi and four other recently defected lawmakers, assuring them of his administration’s commitment to fostering collaboration and development across the state. “Your coming is a plus for the party. A lot of people from other political parties are ready to join us, and soon there will be a carnival,” Okpebholo said. He emphasized ongoing efforts to revitalize Edo’s economy, stating, “We have to mobilize the youths in our state. I promise you will enjoy our party as you have chosen to join us.” Tenebe asserted that the APC now holds a majority in the Edo State House of Assembly, citing Governor Okpebholo’s “developmental strides” as a key factor in attracting defectors. Osamwonyi, in his remarks, attributed his decision to the PDP’s internal divisions and the governor’s performance. “The several projects captured in the budget for Uhunmwonde people are impressive. I had no choice but to join the party for the development of my people,” he said. Itua noted that the governor specifically highlighted plans to prioritize infrastructure and youth engagement in Uhunmwonde Local Government, vowing to “open the area for growth.” The statement concluded with Okpebholo reaffirming Edo’s readiness to support President Tinubu’s re-election bid, declaring, “We have kick-started our own campaigns for the president in 2027.” Fred Itua, the Chief Press Secretary, reiterated the administration’s focus on bipartisan cooperation, quoting the governor’s pledge to “create a conducive atmosphere for all to operate.” The defection ceremony marked the latest in a series of political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

MASS DEFECTION TO APC IN SOUTH SOUTH PREDICTED BY GOV OKPEBHOLO

Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has predicted a wave of massive defections from opposition parties to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the South-South zone ahead of the 2027 presidential election. Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, in a statement, quoted Governor Okpebholo as saying the defections would be a result of the APC’s growing popularity. “Today, I am happy and proud to say that I am a son to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” Okpebholo said. Fred Itua confirmed that Okpebholo expressed his commitment to developing Edo State. Okpebholo expressed gratitude to the people of Edo State for their support and prayers, assuring them that his administration would bring progress and development to the state. Fred Itua noted that Okpebholo said, “The people of Edo State will not regret voting me as their Governor.” Okpebholo also inspected Chief Lee Ikpea’s Medical Center, where he was taken on a tour of the facility.

TRIBUNAL VICTORY: REDEFINING THE ROLE OF OPPOSITION POLITICS IN EDO STATE

By Fred Itua The recent ruling of the Edo State Election Petition Tribunal, which saw the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lose its bid to overturn the election victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo, marks a defining moment in the state’s political landscape. While elections and legal challenges are essential aspects of democracy, what follows is even more crucial—the role of the opposition in ensuring governance is accountable, effective, and people-centered. However, this must be pursued in a manner that prioritizes the development and stability of Edo State rather than fueling acrimony, political tension, and divisive rhetoric. A vibrant opposition plays a crucial role in strengthening democracy. It is expected to provide constructive criticism, propose alternative policies, and ensure that the ruling government remains accountable to the people. However, for this role to be beneficial, it must be driven by the genuine interest of the people rather than personal vendettas, obstructionist tactics, or an attempt to undermine the legitimacy of the government. In Edo State, the focus should now shift from post-election bitterness to responsible opposition politics. The people of Edo have made their decision through the ballot, and the legal process has affirmed it. It is now imperative that the opposition, especially the PDP, restrategizes its approach by offering meaningful policy alternatives rather than engaging in actions that could destabilize governance. One of the most damaging aspects of opposition politics in Nigeria is the tendency for acrimonious engagements that serve only to inflame tensions rather than address pressing governance issues. When opposition leaders resort to inciting the public against the government, spreading misinformation, or engaging in character assassination, they create an environment of hostility that hinders governance rather than improving it. Edo State cannot afford to be embroiled in unnecessary political squabbles that distract from the task of development. The challenges before the Okpebholo-led administration require cooperation, innovative thinking, and a commitment to service delivery. Any opposition that seeks to continuously heat up the polity for selfish political gains is doing a disservice to the very people it claims to represent. True opposition is not about opposing for opposition’s sake; it is about providing credible alternatives and engaging constructively with the government of the day. There are many pressing issues in Edo State—economic development, infrastructure, education, security, and healthcare—that require the collective input of all stakeholders, including the opposition. Rather than staging protests or engaging in campaigns to delegitimize the government, the opposition should leverage democratic institutions such as the State House of Assembly, public discourse forums, and the media to articulate well-thought-out policy alternatives. Political parties that lost at the polls should focus on rebuilding, strengthening their grassroots engagement, and preparing robust policy proposals that can win public support in future elections. Democracy thrives when all parties respect the electoral process and its outcomes. The people of Edo have chosen their leader, and the court has validated this choice. Any attempt to undermine Governor Monday Okpebholo’s administration through disruptive tactics would not only be undemocratic but also counterproductive. The opposition must recognize that its role is not to create instability but to ensure that governance is people-centered and effective. As Edo State moves forward, it is time for all political actors to set aside differences and focus on governance. The ruling party must be open to constructive criticism, while the opposition must act responsibly, engaging in issues-based politics rather than resorting to acrimony. The interest of Edo people must remain paramount, and every political action should be geared toward their well-being and progress. Governor Monday Okpebholo has a mandate to govern, and he must be given the space to deliver on his promises. The opposition, rather than being an obstacle, should be a partner in ensuring that democracy works for everyone. Politics should be a contest of ideas, not a battleground of personal or party rivalries. Edo State deserves better, and it is only through responsible and constructive engagement that true progress can be achieved. Fred Itua is the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor.

EDO STATE GOVERNOR WINS TRIBUNAL VICTORY, EXTENDS OLIVE BRANCH TO OPPOSITION

The Elections Tribunal has upheld the victory of Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State, dismissing all claims by the opposition. The Tribunal’s verdict validates the overwhelming support demonstrated by the citizens and residents of Edo State during the election. In a statement, the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor, Fred Itua, said Governor Okpebholo wishes to express his profound gratitude to the Tribunal for their diligence and fairness. Itua noted that the Governor also extends his sincere appreciation to the people of Edo State for their unwavering support and belief in his vision for a prosperous and united state. “This victory is not mine alone, but a victory for every citizen and resident of Edo State. It is a mandate to continue the work we have started, to build a state where everyone has the opportunity to thrive,” Governor Okpebholo said, as stated by Itua. Fred Itua emphasized that the Governor remains committed to his promise of good governance, transparency, and inclusive development. The Governor has called upon all citizens, including the opposition and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Asue Ighodalo, to join hands in the spirit of unity and work together for the progress of Edo State. Itua reiterated that the administration of Governor Okpebholo remains focused on delivering on its campaign promises and will not be distracted by frivolous litigation. Fred Itua stated that the administration is committed to serving the people of Edo State with dedication and integrity.

JUDGMENT DAY IN EDO

By Fred Itua This Wednesday, Edo State will witness a defining moment in its democratic journey as the Election Petition Tribunal delivers its much-anticipated judgment on the 2024 gubernatorial election. It is a day that carries the weight of history, the hopes of the people, and the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system. For months, political actors and citizens alike have waited anxiously as legal fireworks unfolded in courtrooms, with petitions challenging the legitimacy of the election results. Allegations of irregularities and electoral malpractice have been examined meticulously, and now, the moment of truth has arrived. This judgment is more than just a legal pronouncement; it is a test of our democratic institutions. Will justice be served? Will the tribunal’s decision alter the true will of the people? These are the questions on the minds of Edo people and Nigerians at large. This is an opportunity for Edo State—and indeed the entire nation—to demonstrate maturity in governance and respect for the rule of law. However, if the proceedings at the tribunal are anything to go by, this verdict may be nothing more than an academic exercise—one that merely reaffirms what the world has known since the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Senator Monday Okpebholo of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the duly elected governor of Edo State having garnered a total of 291,667 votes, defeating his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who secured 247,274 votes and Olumide Akpata of the Labour Party (LP) who came third with 22,763 votes. The facts remain unshaken. Edo people spoke clearly at the ballot box, and INEC, in line with its constitutional mandate, affirmed their collective will. The so-called contestations that followed have done little to dent the overwhelming evidence of Governor Okpebholo’s victory. Instead, what we have seen are desperate attempts by the opposition to clutch at legal straws, hoping for a courtroom miracle that neither facts nor law support. Elections are won at the polling units, not in tribunals. The people of Edo made their choice, and that choice has since translated into a government already delivering on its promises. Governor Okpebholo has hit the ground running, tackling governance with the seriousness it deserves. Infrastructural development is on course, and the people are already reaping the dividends of good leadership. The question then arises—what exactly is the opposition hoping to achieve with this tribunal case? Of course, the legal process must be respected, but it is important to recognize that democracy thrives on the will of the majority. The courtroom drama that has played out over the past months has only reinforced Senator Monday Okpebholo’s victory. Any contrary claim is nothing but political theatrics designed to distract from the reality of APC’s well-deserved victory. Beyond the verdict, the response of political stakeholders will shape the future of Edo’s democracy. Will the opposition accept the judgment with grace, or will further legal battles ensue? The responsibility lies not just with politicians but also with the people, civil society, and security agencies to ensure that peace prevails. As the tribunal delivers its judgment, Edo people should rest assured that their mandate remains intact. No amount of legal maneuvering can rewrite the history that was made on election day. The opposition may seek to create doubt where none exists, but the truth remains unshaken—Senator Monday Okpebholo is the choice of the people, and he will continue to lead Edo State on the path of progress. One thing is clear: governance will not pause, and Edo’s march towards a brighter future will continue, unbothered by distractions. Fred Itua is the Chief Press Secretary to the Edo State Governor.

EDO STATE GOVERNORSHIP ELECTION TRIBUNAL DISMISSES ACTION ALLIANCE’S PETITION

The Edo State Governorship Election Tribunal has dismissed a petition filed by the Action Alliance (AA) seeking to nullify the election of Monday Okpheboloh as Edo State governor. In a unanimous decision, the Justice Wilfred Kpochi-led three-member Tribunal panel dismissed the petition, citing lack of merit. Rufai Omo-Aje, who claims to be the chairman of the AA, had filed the petition alleging that he was prevented by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from presenting a candidate for the election. However, the Tribunal ruled that Omo-Aje lacks the legal standing to file the petition, as he did not participate in the party primary nor the actual governorship election, where Tom Iseghohi-Okojie was the AA’s candidate. The Tribunal also stated that the issue brought before it is a pre-election matter, which it lacks jurisdiction to attend to, as it borders on the internal workings of the political party. This decision is a significant victory for Governor Okpheboloh, who has been facing challenges to his election victory.

Okpebholo acknowledged the moral impact of Ramadan’s acts of charity and prayers, calling on Muslims to sustain virtues like compassion and harmony.
