PRESIDENT TINUBU ANNOUNCES LEADERSHIP OVERHAUL AT FEDERAL UNIVERSITIES

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced significant leadership changes at several federal universities, including the University of Abuja, now known as Yakubu Gowon University. These changes are effective immediately. In a statement, Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga, said the changes are part of the administration’s efforts to revitalize Nigeria’s higher education system through dynamic leadership and accountability. President Tinubu dissolved the entire governing council of Yakubu Gowon University and relieved Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi of her duties as Vice-Chancellor. Senator Lanre Tejuoso has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of the Yakubu Gowon University, while Professor Lar Patricia Manko has been appointed Acting Vice Chancellor for a six-month term. Other changes include the removal of Professor Polycarp Emeka Chigbu as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), and his replacement by Professor Oguejiofu T. Ujam for six months. Gen. Ike Nwachukwu has been reassigned as Pro-Chancellor of the University of Uyo, while Engineer Olubunmi Kayode Ojo has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of UNN. Professor Zubairu Tajo Abdullahi has been appointed to succeed Ojo at the Federal University of Lokoja. Senator Sani Stores has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Alvan Ikoku University of Education, succeeding Senator Joy Emordi. Barrister Olugbenga Kukoyi has been appointed Pro-Chancellor of Nnamdi Azikiwe University in Awka, Anambra State. Onanuga stated that all appointments and reassignment decisions are effective immediately. President Tinubu emphasized that these changes aim to strengthen governance and academic excellence within Nigeria’s tertiary education sector.
