NIGERIA PARTNERS UNICEF TO TRAIN 20M YOUTH IN DIGITAL SKILLS BY 2030

The Federal Government of Nigeria has renewed its strategic partnership with the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) to train and empower 20 million young Nigerians with digital skills by 2030. Vice President Kashim Shettima has accepted to chair the board of Generation Unlimited Nigeria (GenU 9JA), a public-private-youth partnership platform. In a statement made available to the press, the Senior Special Assistant to The President on Media & Communications, Stanley Nkwocha noted that Shettima warned that Nigeria’s rapidly growing population presents both a challenge and an opportunity. “It is an honour for me to serve as the Chairman of Generation Unlimited (GenU 9JA). This platform provides a vista of opportunities for our young people. Beyond rhetoric, if we want to survive and thrive, we must empower our youth through digital means. That’s the only way forward,” Nkwocha quoted Shettima as saying. Shettima stressed that Nigeria is not seeking handouts but sustainable, equitable partnerships. “We are not looking for charity. We want a mutually beneficial relationship—one based on respect and shared interests. This is why I’m very passionate about the digital initiative,” Nkwocha quoted Shettima as saying. The GenU 9JA initiative aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which prioritises inclusive development, digital innovation, and youth empowerment. Shettima described the initiative as a beautiful programme that would enable Nigerian youths to trade their skills in the global market. UN Resident Coordinator, Mohammed Fall, praised Nigeria’s leadership under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, noting that the GenU platform is central to addressing youth unemployment, educational inequality, and digital exclusion. “Under the Renewed Hope Agenda, youth-focused initiatives—skills, digital access, and employment—are critical. And GenU is helping to drive those priorities,” Fall said. Nkwocha reported that UNICEF Deputy Representative, Dr. Rownak Khan, added that GenU 9JA is one of UNICEF’s most successful global youth empowerment programmes, with Nigeria showcased as a model. “We’ve seen incredible results from Nigeria. Few countries globally have recorded the level of youth impact that GenU 9JA has achieved,” Khan said. The programme has already impacted over 10 million young people, with 1,500 job linkages secured, according to UNICEF Lagos Chief, Celine Lafoucriere. Nkwocha noted that Lafoucriere emphasized the need to strengthen coordination among partners to reach the target of 20 million youth by 2030.

NUJ PARTNERS WITH NIZAMIYE HOSPITAL FOR FREE MEDICAL OUTREACH

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has partnered with Nizamiye Hospital to organize a free medical outreach in June and during the NUJ’s upcoming Press Week. The initiative aims to promote public health awareness and provide free healthcare services to journalists within the Federal Capital Territory. During a recent courtesy visit to Nizamiye Hospital in Abuja, the NUJ delegation, led by its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, discussed potential areas of collaboration, particularly in health advocacy and community service. The hospital’s Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Mohammed Abubakar, expressed readiness to support the Press Week and series of medical outreaches for journalists. “We welcome this kind of partnership. All we need is a formal letter outlining the outreach plan, and we will proceed together,” Abubakar said. He also urged the media to highlight the quality healthcare options available locally to help reduce the increasing trend of medical tourism. Abubakar shared the hospital’s successful outreach programs, which have served thousands of Nigerians in various states. “In Keffi, we treated about 2,500 patients over two days. In Katsina, around 2,250; in Bauchi, approximately 2,700; and in Owerri, about 1,700,” he explained. The outreach programs cover multiple specialties, including cardiology, orthopedics, pediatrics, gynecology, ophthalmology, and dentistry. Abubakar commended the Federal Government for removing import tariffs on pharmaceuticals, noting that this policy would significantly improve access to essential medicines. “It’s not all about business but also helping people. For instance, we pay so much on electricity and keep our foreign doctors,” he added. He emphasized the need for the media to tackle medical tourism and create more awareness about treatments available in Nigeria. Comrade Grace Ike praised Nizamiye Hospital’s dedication to quality healthcare and its ongoing community support efforts. She reaffirmed the union’s commitment to raising awareness about local healthcare solutions and improving the welfare of its members through strategic partnerships. “We look forward to a stronger partnership beyond this medical outreach. For example, issues like supporting internally displaced persons (IDPs) in partnership with states are not well publicized. Our platform can help amplify such causes across the country, given that we represent all journalists in the FCT,” Ike said. The collaboration represents a significant step forward in bridging media and medical advocacy in Nigeria, with the medical outreach set to be a key highlight of the NUJ FCT Council’s Press Week.

The partnership was announced during Jaymoni’s visit to the NUJ FCT Council in Abuja, where he met with the council’s chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, and secretary, Comrade Jide Oyekunle. Additionally, his Feed The Street Programme will take place in Lagos on the same day. Comrade Ike praised Jaymoni’s music, community-focused efforts, and entrepreneurial drive, stating, “I’m really happy to see such a young and talented artist like you. There’s a lot we can do together because we share a common energy. Music is life, and we, as journalists, understand the importance of platforms like yours.” She also commended Jaymoni’s humility, saying, “You’re humble, and that’s important. Popularity can sometimes cause people to lose focus, but I see in you someone who is determined to change the narrative. Your music and efforts to give back to society are truly inspiring, and we at NUJ FCT are excited to partner with you in any way we can.” The partnership between Jaymoni and NUJ FCT is expected to create exciting opportunities for both the entertainment industry and the media community, highlighting the importance of collaboration and mutual support. In the context of Nigerian entertainment law, this partnership underscores the significance of intellectual property rights and collective management organizations in promoting artistic creativity and protecting performers’ rights. As the entertainment industry continues to evolve, collaborations like this may play a crucial role in shaping its future.
