NLC CONSULTS WITH PRESIDENT TINUBU OVER INSECURITY, PROTEST DECISION PENDING

Members of the Nigeria Labour Congress met with President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa late Tuesday ahead of a planned nationwide protest over Nigeria’s worsening security situation. The meeting included the Minister of Labour as well as the governors of Imo, Edo, and Plateau states. NLC President Joe Ajaero, leading the delegation, described the meeting as a consultation. “The discussions are still being reviewed,” he said, stopping short of confirming whether the protest scheduled for Wednesday 17th will go ahead. Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State, who is also the chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum, reiterated that the talks were consultations. “Clarity on outcomes will emerge in due course,” he added. The Minister of State for Labour stated that the NLC leaders were satisfied to meet the President. The NLC had initially vowed to protest to highlight insecurity’s impact on workers and communities, citing incidents such as the killing of a teacher and the kidnapping of children in Kebbi. The congress has urged all state councils and affiliates to mobilise fully, stressing that insecurity undermines social cohesion, disrupts businesses, and threatens public safety.
