NORTHERN CAN CONDEMNS BRUTAL KILLINGS IN PLATEAU STATE

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Northern Nigeria, has strongly condemned the recent brutal killings in Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State, describing the attacks as “senseless and barbaric”. In a statement, Chairman of Northern CAN, Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam, expressed deep sadness and outrage over the loss of innocent lives. Rev. Dr. Yakubu Pam stated that the repeated acts of violence are a violation of human dignity and the sanctity of life, and a direct threat to the peace and unity of the state and nation. “We are deeply saddened and outraged by the senseless and barbaric attacks that have claimed the lives of innocent and peace-loving citizens,” Pam said. The association called on security agencies to act swiftly and decisively to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice. Pam urged the government at all levels to take proactive steps to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of lives. “Plateau must not bleed again,” he emphasized. Pam reiterated that the time has come for all stakeholders to unite in purpose and work together to end the cycle of violence that has plagued Plateau State for far too long. “We pray for peace, healing, and justice,” he added. This sentiment is shared by Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, who described the recurring attacks as genocide, rejecting the characterization of the violence as a herder-farmer conflict.

TINUBU CONDEMNS PLATEAU ATTACKS, URGES GOVERNOR MUTFWANG TO RESOLVE UNDERLYING ISSUES

President Bola Tinubu has expressed profound sorrow over the recent bloodshed in Plateau State, which claimed over 40 lives. He strongly condemns the violence and extends his sympathies to Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the state government, and the people of Plateau. Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, disclosed in a statement that President Tinubu urged Governor Mutfwang to summon the necessary political will to resolve the crisis and establish enduring peace. Bayo Onanuga said, “The ongoing violence between communities in Plateau State, rooted in misunderstandings between different ethnic and religious groups, must cease.” President Tinubu emphasized the importance of love and unity beyond religious and ethnic lines, saying, “We cannot allow this devastation and the tit-for-tat attacks to continue. Enough is enough.” He instructed security agencies to thoroughly investigate the crisis and identify those responsible for orchestrating the violent acts. Bayo Onanuga further stated that the Federal Government remains committed to supporting Governor Mutfwang and the Plateau State government in promoting dialogue, fostering social cohesion, and ensuring accountability. “The political leadership in Plateau State, led by Governor Caleb Mutfwang, must address the root cause of this age-long problem,” Bayo Onanuga added, quoting the President. Bayo Onanuga also noted that President Tinubu has discussed the problems with Governor Mutfwang over time and offered suggestions for lasting peace. Bayo Onanuga reiterated that it’s time to tackle the underlying issues fairly and find a lasting solution.

FATHER AND TWO SONS KILLED IN PLATEAU STATE ATTACK

A father and his two sons were brutally killed in Zogu village, Miango District, Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State. The victims, identified as 56-year-old Weyi Gebeh, and his sons, 25-year-old Zhu Weyi and 16-year-old Henry Weyi, were killed while they were asleep. The spokesperson of Irigwe Development Association, Sam Jugo, confirmed the incident, describing it as “barbaric”. This recent attack brings the total number of deaths recorded this week to nine. “The leadership of Irigwe Development Association has been notified of yet another attack on Zogu village, Miango which claimed the lives of a father and two of his sons,” Jugo said. The community leader expressed utmost displeasure over the deteriorating situation in Irigwe land and called on security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators. “The way criminal elements invade our motherland and kill with impunity seems to suggest a more sinister motive than mere reprisals,” Jugo added. The Irigwe Development Association has urged the Plateau State government and security agencies to take immediate action to stop the killing of innocent people in the area. “IDA therefore, calls on the Plateau State government and the security to do the needful and stop the killing of innocent people in Irigwe land,” Jugo emphasized. This incident is the latest in a string of violent attacks in Plateau State, which has been plagued by recurring violence and insecurity. Civil Society Organizations in the state have demanded the withdrawal of military personnel, citing their ineffectiveness in curbing the violence.
