OSUN LG SAGA: POLICE CONDEMN VIOLENCE, VOW TO DEAL WITH PERPETRATORS

The Nigeria Police Force has condemned the ongoing violence in Osun State, which has disrupted peace and safety in the state, leading to destruction of property and loss of innocent lives. The violence erupted in Osogbo, Osun State, on Monday as members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) clashed at the Osogbo Central Local Government Area. The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM., has taken decisive action by ordering the deployment of additional tactical squads to Osun State to bolster security and restore law and order, said the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, in a statement. Adejobi stated that the Police recognizes that violence undermines the democratic process and threatens the wellbeing of the citizens, and hereby affirms its commitment to identifying and prosecuting the perpetrators of these acts and causing them to face the full weight of the law. The conflict began when both parties attempted to enter the council secretariat, resulting in gunshots and a man being seen covered in blood, fighting with another suspected hoodlum. The Osogbo/Ibokun Road, which passes in front of the local government secretariat, was deserted during the shooting. Armed police operatives were stationed at the entrance, while hoodlums responsible for the gunfire shot sporadically, causing panic in the neighborhood. Similar incidents occurred in other local government secretariats across the state. Adejobi reiterated that the perpetrators of these criminal acts will be fished out and made to face the consequences of their unwarranted ill-fated acts. Olumuyiwa Adejobi urged citizens to remain calm as normalcy is being restored. Osun indigenes, leaders, and stakeholders are hereby urged to shun violence and go about their legitimate businesses. The judiciary remains the ultimate arbiter of all electoral disputes and political actors must respect and abide by its rulings, upholding the rule of law and democratic principles. Adejobi stated that citizens are advised to go about their lawful business. The Force reiterates its commitment to clamping down on any violent actors who bent on creating brouhaha and breakdown of law and order in any part of the country. The situation in Osun will be closely monitored, and measures will be enforced to ensure a safe environment for all residents.

TRANSPARENCY IN POLICING: IGP WARNS AGAINST INCESSANT TRANSFER OF CASES, MISUSE OF OFFICE

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has raised serious concerns about the unwarranted and unethical practice of transferring ongoing cases and misusing public office by certain officers and individuals. He stressed that these practices undermine investigations and diminish public confidence in the Force, and will no longer be tolerated. Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, noted that the IGP has directed all supervising officers and personnel, particularly those in investigative units, to handle cases with diligence and integrity. Adejobi emphasized that any officer found engaging in indiscriminate transfers of case files or misusing their office will face strict disciplinary actions. Adejobi stated that the recurring practice of transferring cases still under investigation between formations without authorization has been deemed unacceptable. Such actions create unnecessary delays, impose undue burdens on parties involved, and waste resources. The IGP has categorically stated that cases should be investigated within the jurisdiction where alleged offenses occurred unless expressly approved by his office. Equally concerning is the misuse of police authority in civil disputes, particularly in matters of land ownership. The IGP has reminded officers that the police have no jurisdiction over purely civil matters unless there is an underlying criminal element, and even in such cases, investigations must be overseen by the State Commissioners of Police, who will be held accountable for the process and outcome. Adejobi also noted that the filing of frivolous or malicious petitions aimed at harassment or intimidation is another issue the IGP has vowed to address. Moving forward, all petitions submitted to the police must now include a declaration confirming their authenticity and genuineness, and stating that the complaint has not been submitted to any other law enforcement agency or, if it has, that it has been withdrawn before involving the police. The IGP has urged members of the public to submit complaints and petitions directly to the appropriate Police Commands, Divisions, or Units rather than to the IGP’s office, except in cases requiring review, appeal, or special intervention. Adejoji stressed the importance of avoiding framing civil disputes as criminal matters to manipulate police intervention. As part of his commitment to professionalism, the IGP reassures Nigerians of the Force’s dedication to upholding transparency and accountability.

Force Public Relations Officer, ACP OLUMUYIWA ADEJOBI, noted that one of the significant achievements was the arrest of 8 suspects belonging to a gunrunning syndicate operating within Plateau State and its environs. The suspects were arrested after credible intelligence led operatives of the FID-IRT to the first suspect, which consequently led to the discovery of a large cache of arms concealed inside a vehicle doormat belonging to the syndicate. Adejoji stated that the exhibits recovered during this operation included 12 rounds of 7.88mm live ammunitions, 8 fabricated AK47 rifles, 4 fabricated revolver guns, 4 fabricated semi-automatic pistols, 11 AK47 magazines, and 1105 live AK47 ammunition. Additionally, operatives of the FID-IRT arrested one Amos Sunday Gyang ‘m’ at Plateau State in possession of a semi-automatic pistol he claimed to have found hidden inside a cushion of an apartment he had rented. Adejoji emphasized that it is a crime to be found in possession of a weapon without proper licensing. “In the case of discovering any weapon, citizens should ensure to notify the police and avoid any sort of implication,” he said. Adejoji also reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to protecting lives and property, sparing no efforts in effectively combatting all security threats. The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, has demonstrated its dedication to enhancing national security and combating organized crime. As Adejoji noted, the Force will continue to work tirelessly to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

POLICE SERVICE COMMISSION ORDERS IMMEDIATE RETIREMENT OF SENIOR POLICE OFFICERS

The Police Service Commission has directed the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have exceeded 35 years in service or are above 60 years old. This directive follows controversy surrounding the tenure of Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, who recently turned 60. Despite the Police and the Attorney General of the Federation claiming his continued stay in office is lawful, the Commission has decided to enforce the mandatory retirement age. According to Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, the Commission reviewed its earlier stance, which allowed force entrants to use their date of enlistment instead of their initial appointment date. However, this decision has been reversed due to its inconsistency with Public Service Rule No. 020908, which mandates retirement upon reaching 35 years in service or the age of 60. Ani stated, “The Police Service Commission has approved the immediate retirement of senior police officers who have spent more than 35 years in service and those above 60 years of age.” The directive has been formally communicated to the Inspector General of Police for immediate implementation. The Commission’s decision was made during an extraordinary meeting presided over by Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu, with other notable attendees including Justice Adamu Paul Galumje and DIG Taiwo Lakanu. The Commission’s decision has been conveyed to the Inspector General of Police for implementation.
