EASTERN OBOLO OIL SPILL: PEACE POINT DEVELOPMENT FOUNDATION URGES STERLING OIL TO TAKE IMMEDIATE ACTION
A civil society organization, Peace Point Development Foundation, has implored Sterling Oil Exploration & Energy Production Company Limited to halt the ongoing oil spill in Eastern Obolo local government area of Akwa Ibom State. Media Contact for the organization, Ekemini Simon, disclosed this after the group visited the affected communities. According to Coordinator of Peace Point Development Foundation, Comrade Umo Isua-Ikoh, the oil spill has devastated a large part of the mangrove at Akpabom community and is also polluting the Atlantic Ocean. “This is an unacceptable development as the aquatic environment will be deeply polluted,” Isua-Ikoh emphasized. The organization is calling on Sterling Oil to stop the spill, clean up the environment, and compensate the affected communities. Isua-Ikoh also urged the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (NOSDRA) to investigate the incident and take necessary actions. Furthermore, the organization is urging the Akwa Ibom State government to closely monitor the operations of companies in the state to protect the environment and the livelihood of its people. Isua-Ikoh expressed concern over the company’s alleged disregard for environmental regulations and the impact on the local ecosystem.
