The Benue State Police Command has successfully rescued 14 passengers who were kidnapped by armed gunmen on a Benue Links bus traveling from Makurdi to Otukpo. The incident occurred on Thursday, April 3, 2025, around 8:30 pm at Otukpo Burnt Bricks area, where the kidnappers opened fire, killing the driver and a front-seat passenger. Upon receiving the distress call, the police, in collaboration with the Benue State Civil Protection Guard, swiftly responded and launched a search operation in the nearby forest. On Friday, April 4, 2025, around 3 pm, the police engaged the kidnappers in a gun duel, overpowering them and rescuing the 14 hostages. However, two of the rescued victims sustained machete cuts, and one victim died at the hospital, while others are receiving treatment. The Commissioner of Police, CP Steve Yabanet, expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and assured the public that efforts are underway to apprehend the fleeing suspects. “We commiserate with families of the three passengers that lost their lives in this dastardly incident and pledge our commitment to bring perpetrators to book,” Yabanet said. He urged residents of Otukpo to report anyone with gunshot injuries to the authorities, as many of the bandits received gunshot injuries during the exchange of fire.
