AKPABIO SAYS NIGERIA-U.S. SECURITY PARTNERSHIP KEY TO DEFEATING TERRORISM

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has described the ongoing military collaboration between Nigeria and the United States as a critical step toward restoring peace and stability across the country. Akpabio made the assertion on Tuesday while welcoming senators back from the Christmas and New Year recess as the Senate resumed plenary in Abuja. He noted that strategic partnerships with international allies remain vital in addressing Nigeria’s persistent security challenges, particularly terrorism and insurgency. According to the Senate President, the security gains recorded so far are a reflection of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strong commitment to strengthening national security and deepening cooperation with global partners to confront threats to peace and stability. He reaffirmed Nigeria’s resolve to continue working closely with allied nations, stressing that sustained collaboration is necessary to effectively tackle forces undermining national unity and safety. Meanwhile, the Senate observed a minute of silence in honour of the late Senator Godiya Akwashiki, who died on December 31, 2025. Following the brief tribute, the upper chamber adjourned its sitting earlier than the usual close of legislative activities.
