OYO STATE GOVERNOR SEYI MAKINDE VOWS TO PROSECUTE KINGMAKERS OVER ALLEGED BRIBE COLLECTION

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has warned that kingmakers who allegedly collected bribes to influence the selection of the new Alaafin of Oyo will be prosecuted unless they support the newly appointed monarch. Makinde made this declaration while presenting the Certificate of Appointment and the Staff of Office to Prince Abimbola Owoade as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo. The governor stated that the Alaafin’s stool is important to the entire Yoruba race and not only to Oyo Town or Oyo State. He emphasized that under his watch, the stool will not be toyed with or sold. “Those who are, therefore, still hell-bent on destabilising our traditional institution in Oyo Town will be prosecuted over the money they collected unless they go and support the new Alaafin,” Makinde said. Makinde also debunked rumors that he influenced the selection of the new Alaafin, stating that his administration will not play politics with governance. The proper coronation of Owoade as the Alaafin is scheduled to hold in four weeks. In his acceptance speech, Owoade appreciated the governor, chiefs, and the people of Oyo Town for making his appointment possible. The controversy surrounding Owoade’s emergence as the new Alaafin began when five of the seven members of the Oyomesi, also known as kingmakers, rejected his appointment, claiming they recommended Prince Luqman Gbadegesin as their nominee.

NEW ALAAFIN OF OYO TAKES THE THRONE AMIDST CONTROVERSY

The 46th Alaafin-elect, Prince Akeem Abimbola Owoade, has formally ascended to the throne of the Alaafin of Oyo, following the presentation of the Staff of Office and certificate of appointment by Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State. The ceremony took place on Monday, January 13, at the State Government House in Agodi, Ibadan. Governor Makinde described the Alaafin-elect as a “visionary leader committed to preserving the rich cultural and historical heritage of the Oyo Kingdom.” He emphasized the importance of the Alaafin’s role as not only a traditional ruler but also a custodian of the kingdom’s legacy, expressing confidence in Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade’s ability to lead with wisdom, integrity, and a dedication to unity. In his acceptance speech, the new Alaafin expressed gratitude to the people of Oyo for their trust and support, pledging to prioritize the kingdom’s development and the welfare of its residents. “We urge the people of Oyo State to support the new Alaafin and join the government in celebrating this historic moment,” said Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ademola Ojo. However, the appointment of Owoade as the new Alaafin has been met with controversy, as two kingmakers have described the appointment as “illegal and invalid.” In a letter to the governor, they insisted that they did not recommend Prince Abimbola Owoade to the state government and instead chose Prince Luqman Adelodun Gbadegesin as their candidate for the Alaafin.

KINGMAKERS REJECT GOVERNOR MAKINDE’S APPOINTMENT OF NEW ALAAFIN OF OYO

The kingmakers in Oyo Town have rejected Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde’s appointment of Prince Abimbola Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. In a letter signed by their legal representative, Adekunle Sobalolu, the kingmakers declared Owoade’s appointment as null and void, illegal, and unlawful. The Oyo State Government had announced Owoade as the Alaafin-elect on Friday, January 10, 2025. However, the kingmakers claimed they never recommended Owoade to the state government. Instead, they insisted that Prince Lukman Gbadegesin was the only person they recommended as the next Alaafin, with the majority of the kingmakers’ lawful votes on September 30, 2022. The kingmakers stated, “Prince Lukman Adelodun Gbadegesin, having obtained the majority of votes of the kingmakers present, was deemed appointed and his name was forwarded to Your Excellency as the candidate appointed by the kingmakers as Alaafin of Oyo for your approval, which you refused to approve for no disclosed reason at all.” Five kingmakers are objecting to the governor’s appointment, including the Bashorun of Oyo, Yusuf Layinka; the Lagunna of Oyo, Wakeel Oyedepo; and the Akinniku of Oyo, Hamzat Yusuf. The other two are the warrant chief standing in for Asipa of Oyo, Wahab Oyetunji; and the warrant chief standing in for Alapinní of Oyo, Gbadebo Mufutau. The kingmakers noted that the government’s claim of Owoade’s selection being made after wide consultation and divination was inaccurate. They emphasized that the Alaafin is chosen in strict compliance with the Registered Alaafin of Oyo Chieftaincy Declaration of 1967, which codifies the native law and custom governing the selection process. The kingmakers also stated that the meeting held at the Governor’s Office to select Owoade was unlawful and illegal. They appealed to the people of Oyo Town to remain calm, as they intend to challenge the action in court.

NEW ALAAFIN OF OYO APPROVED BY GOVERNOR SEYI MAKINDE

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has formally approved the appointment of Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade as the new Alaafin of Oyo. This announcement was made after thorough consultations and divinations, and the recommendation of the Oyomesi, the historical Oyo council of kingmakers. According to Prince Dotun Oyelade, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, “Prince Abimbola Akeem Owoade has been recommended by the Oyomesi and approved by Governor Seyi Makinde as the new Alaafin of Oyo.” The Commissioner added that the announcement has put to rest all the social and legal bickering that have ensued since the demise of His Imperial Majesty, Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III on April 22, 2022. Hon. Ademola Ojo, the Honourable Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, called on all citizens of Oyo State to join the Government in celebrating this momentous occasion and lend their support to the new Alaafin of Oyo. The Commissioner prayed that Prince Owoade’s reign will bring peace, prosperity, and unity to the historic Oyo Kingdom. Prince Owoade, a Canada-based mechanical engineer, succeeds the late Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, who died on April 22, 2022, aged 83. He was born in 1975 and earned national and higher national certificates in mechanical engineering from The Federal Polytechnic and The Polytechnic, Ibadan, between 1994 and 2001. The traditional and governmental processes initiated to fill the vacant stool had dragged on for years, with the Oyomesi announcing an 86-man list on September 5, 2022. However, the governor questioned the process and refused to approve the initial candidate, Prince Lukman Gbadegesin. With Prince Owoade’s appointment, the government hopes to bring progress and harmony to the people of Oyo and strengthen the historic legacy of the Alaafin institution.
