NIGERIA’S WORLD CUP HOPES ENDED BY DR CONGO IN DRAMATIC PENALTY SHOOTOUT

The Super Eagles of Nigeria saw their journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup come to a heartbreaking end on Sunday night after a 4-3 penalty shootout defeat to DR Congo at the Crown Prince Moulay El Hassan Stadium in Rabat. The match concluded 1-1 after regulation and extra time, dashing Nigeria’s hopes of advancing to the final playoff stage. Nigeria started brightly with Frank Onyeka opening the scoring in the third minute, but DR Congo responded through Meschack Elia’s equalizer in the 32nd minute. Despite intense efforts from both sides over 120 minutes, no winner emerged, forcing the game into penalties. In the shootout, Congolese captain Chancel Mbemba calmly converted the decisive spot-kick to seal a 4-3 victory for his team. “We showed tremendous character tonight,” said Mbemba. “Everyone believed until the end, and we are thrilled to keep our World Cup dream alive.” Nigeria’s coach expressed disappointment in the outcome. “It’s a tough pill to swallow,” he said. “We had our opportunities but fell short in the shootout. I’m proud of the boys’ effort, but congratulations to DR Congo.” The victory sends DR Congo to the inter-confederation playoff tournament in Guadalajara and Monterrey, Mexico, next March, where two remaining spots for the 2026 World Cup will be contested.

NIGERIA WORLD CUP HOPES HIT AS SUPER EAGLES BOYCOTT TRAINING OVER BONUS DISPUTE

The Super Eagles of Nigeria refused to train in Rabat on Monday as a dispute over bonus payments with the Nigeria Football Federation threatens their preparations ahead of their 2026 FIFA World Cup African play-off semi-final against Gabon. The NFF President was in Morocco and discussions between the players, technical staff, and officials were held. The disagreement was not over the players’ daily allowances, which the NFF had promised to pay, but the amount of the winning bonus for the play-off ties. According to sources, the players requested $15,000 for each match, totalling $30,000, but the NFF offered $10,000 per match. They insisted that until a resolution was reached, training would remain suspended, and a boycott of the Gabon tie was a possibility. A source explained the history of the bonus dispute, noting that players previously received $5,000 per match and when Amaju Pinnick assumed office, he doubled the amount to $10,000. Even so, some officials argued for a reduction back to $5,000, creating controversy. “Eventually, the amount was kept at $10,000 per player per match. Now all the players are requesting $15,000 per match. They argue that other countries, such as Cameroon, DR Congo, and Gabon, have increased their own winning bonuses, so they want Nigeria to follow suit. That is where we are currently,” the source said. Reflecting the seriousness of the dispute, the players and technical staff released a statement reportedly signed by the squad, emphasising their refusal to train until the bonus issue is resolved. “The full squad, including officials, withheld from training today in Morocco because of the unresolved issues with outstanding payments. The Super Eagles is awaiting a quick resolution to continue the preparation for Thursday’s game with Gabon. Thank you. From the players,” the statement read. Reports from Morocco also said the team’s officials distanced themselves from the standoff. NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau and Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, were yet to respond to inquiries into the matter, as of the time of filing this report. Except Udinese goalkeeper, Maduka Okoye, 23 players were already in camp when the bonus row escalated. The Nigeria Football Federation Communications Director Ademola Olajire and Super Eagles media officer Promise Efoghe were also contacted for comment. The latter acknowledged receipt of the message but had not responded at the time of filing this report. Nigeria is scheduled to face Gabon on Thursday at the 22,000-capacity Moulay Hassan Stadium in Rabat. Cameroon and the Democratic Republic of Congo will contest the other semi-final, with the winners meeting in the final on November 16 to determine who advances to the inter-confederation play-offs for a spot at the 2026 World Cup in North America.

The 2025 AFCON promises thrilling encounters as top nations battle for African supremacy, and the Super Eagles are determined to make a deep run in pursuit of continental glory under their new technical leadership.

PRESIDENT TINUBU COMMENDS SUPER EAGLES FOR KEEPING NIGERIA’S WORLD CUP HOPES ALIVE

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated the Super Eagles of Nigeria on their impressive 4-0 victory over the Benin Republic, lauding the team’s unwavering passion and determination that has reignited national football pride. In a statement issued by Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy) Bayo Onanuga, President Tinubu praised the Super Eagles for the hunger and superlative performance displayed on the field in Uyo. “While the job is not yet complete, I join millions of Nigerian football fans in wishing our team every success in the playoffs,” Bayo Onanuga quoted the President as saying. Bayo Onanuga further relayed President Tinubu’s assurance of the Federal Government’s unwavering support to the coaching crew and players as they strive to secure Nigeria’s place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup hosted jointly by Canada, Mexico and the United States. “As your President, I assure you and the coaching crew of the Federal Government’s support as you strive to secure your place at the tournament. SUPER EAGLES ARRIVE IN SOUTH AFRICA WITHOUT OSIMHEN FOR WORLD CUP QUALIFIER

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have arrived in Bloemfontein, South Africa, ahead of their crucial 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against the Bafana Bafana, but without their star striker, Victor Osimhen. Osimhen sustained an injury during Friday’s encounter against Rwanda’s Amavubi in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and was forced off in the 37th minute, replaced by Cyril Dessers. Despite Osimhen’s absence, the Super Eagles secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Rwanda thanks to a decisive strike from Tolu Arokodare. However, team doctors confirmed on Sunday morning that Osimhen’s injury had worsened and become swollen, ruling him out of the match against South Africa. The must-win tie in Bloemfontein is seen as a major test for the Eagles, who will now have to rely on their attacking depth in the absence of their prolific striker. The team will look to Dessers and other attacking options to fill the void left by Osimhen and secure a positive result against South Africa.

FORMER SUPER EAGLES GOALKEEPER PETER RUFAI REPORTED DEAD AT 61

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper Peter Rufai has reportedly passed away at the age of 61 after a prolonged illness. Rufai, fondly known as “Dodomayana,” was a celebrated goalkeeper who played a key role in Nigeria’s golden football era of the 1990s. Rufai’s career spanned two decades, during which he played club football across Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain. He represented Nigeria in two FIFA World Cups and two Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournaments, earning admiration for his agility, leadership, and passion for the game. Tributes have been pouring in for Rufai from fans, teammates, and football bodies around the world, remembering him not just as a formidable goalkeeper but as a national hero who inspired generations. His passing comes on a particularly tragic day for global football, as news also broke of the death of Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, who reportedly died in a car crash in Spain earlier on Thursday, alongside his brother. Rufai’s legacy will live on, and he will be remembered as one of the finest goalkeepers Nigeria has ever produced. His contributions to Nigerian football will never be forgotten, and he will be deeply missed by fans and fellow footballers alike.

NIGERIA RETAIN UNITY CUP AFTER PENALTY SHOOTOUT WIN OVER JAMAICA

Nigeria claimed the Unity Cup for the second consecutive year, defeating Jamaica in a dramatic penalty shootout following a 2-2 draw in regulation time during Saturday’s final. The Super Eagles struck first when Moses Simon expertly finished from a Cyriel Dessers cross. However, Jamaica, the Reggae Boyz, responded almost immediately, leveling the score through Kaheim Dixon. Nigeria regained the lead thanks to a spectacular individual effort from Samuel Chukwueze. Once again, Jamaica demonstrated resilience, finding an equalizer in the 63rd minute when Jon Russell found the back of the net, forcing the match into extra time and ultimately penalties. With no further goals in extra time, the destiny of the trophy was decided from the penalty spot. Nigeria held their nerve to win the shootout, securing the championship. “It was a tough battle, but the team spirit carried us through,” stated goalscorer Moses Simon. “Scoring in the final is always special, but lifting the trophy again is what matters most.” Match-winner Samuel Chukwueze added, “Scoring that goal felt amazing, but credit to Jamaica, they fought incredibly hard. Winning the shootout and retaining the cup shows our character. This victory is for all Nigerian fans.”

SUPER EAGLES STAR AHMED MUSA TIES THE KNOT WITH FOURTH WIFE IN KANO

Nigeria Super Eagles captain Ahmed Musa has married his fourth wife, Asmau Moriki, in a low-key ceremony in Kano. The 32-year-old footballer, who already had three wives, received permission from head coach Eric Chelle to attend the wedding, which took place on Friday. Musa’s union with Moriki brings his current number of wives to four, following his divorce from his first wife, Jemila, in 2017. He remains married to Juliet Ejue and Miriam, whom he married in 2021. A celebratory dinner in his honor is scheduled for Sunday. The Super Eagles star had to leave the team’s camp at the ongoing Unity Cup in England to attend the wedding ceremony. Despite his departure, Musa featured for over 30 minutes in Nigeria’s 2-1 semi-final victory over Ghana, helping the team reach the final. However, he was absent for the final match against Jamaica. As a devout Muslim, Musa has been open about his faith. Beyond football, Musa has established a strong presence, investing significantly in real estate, oil, and recreational ventures in Kaduna, Abuja, Kano, and Lagos. He also owns property in the United States, where his second wife, Juliet, resides. There is no direct quote from Ahmed Musa in the provided information. However, the story highlights his successful football career and business ventures.

AKPEYI SLAMS SUPER EAGLES, SAYS THEY LACK TEAM UNIT

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Daniel Akpeyi, has expressed his disappointment over the team’s current state and their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign. Akpeyi slammed the team for lacking a proper unit, unlike South Africa, who have made visible progress under their coach, Hugo Broos. “The standing in the World Cup qualifiers group is a clear reflection that South African football is higher,” Akpeyi said. “You can have big players, but coming up with a team is something that many fail to do.” Akpeyi attributed South Africa’s success to their team effort, saying, “We [Nigeria] could be like Bafana Bafana if we have players who play for the country and not for themselves.” Akpeyi believes that Nigeria deserves to be in a better position in the qualifiers, but lacks fundamentals such as cohesion and identity. “I strongly believe that we [Nigeria] deserve to be in first position,” he said. “Right now, we lack so many fundamentals that South Africa has. That also includes cohesion and identity.” With Rwanda and Benin still within touching distance, Nigeria must now deliver consistent performances in the remaining fixtures to stand any chance of reaching the 2026 World Cup. Akpeyi’s comments have added to the scrutiny surrounding head coach Eric Chelle, who is under pressure to guide the team to the World Cup.
