MEDIA OWNER’S ABUSIVE NATURE EXPOSED AS AKURE RADIO STATION CHAIRMAN ALLEGEDLY ASSAULTS FORMER STAFF MEMBER
A disturbing incident has come to light at Breeze 91.9 FM, a radio station based in Akure, Ondo State, where the acting chairman, Mr. Tokunbo Opebi, allegedly physically assaulted a former staff member, Mercy Okafor. The incident, which occurred on Tuesday at the station’s premises, has shed light on the abusive nature of some media owners in Nigeria. According to sources, Okafor had submitted her resignation letter and was attacked by Opebi when she returned the company’s data. The source claimed that Opebi struck Okafor in the head with his shoe and unleashed a barrage of blows on her. “It took the intervention of Bimpa Dele-Mogaji and Joyin Johnson to free Okafor from the hands of Tokunbo, who was throwing punches at the young lady,” the source said. Okafor, who joined the station as a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) corps member and was later employed, had been handling multiple responsibilities, including accounting and on-air personality duties. However, the source alleged that the station has a poor payment package, with some on-air personalities earning as little as 25,000 Naira per month, and temporary workers receiving 10,000 Naira, in violation of Nigerian labor laws. The source further claimed that Opebi has a history of abusive behavior, stating, “Tokunbo is responsible for almost all the woes that have happened to that station. If you stay, you won’t get paid regularly, if you leave, you might get arrested on trumped-up allegations.” Okafor has reportedly received treatment for internal injuries sustained from the assault and has been taken home to Ile-Ife by her relatives for further treatment. Attempts to reach the general manager of the station, Sunday Ajongbolo, and the acting chairman, Tokunbo Opebi, were unsuccessful.
