Trump Orders Immediate US Blockade of Strait of Hormuz
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will immediately begin a naval blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, marking a sharp escalation in tensions with Iran following the collapse of recent peace talks.
In a statement, Trump said the U.S. Navy would “immediately” interdict vessels attempting to enter or leave the vital shipping route, particularly targeting ships that comply with Iran’s newly imposed transit tolls.
The announcement comes after negotiations between Washington and Tehran in Islamabad failed to produce an agreement, particularly over Iran’s nuclear programme and control of the waterway.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical oil corridors, handling roughly 20% of global oil shipments. Any disruption to traffic through the passage has immediate implications for global energy markets.
Tensions have been mounting in recent weeks, with Iran reportedly restricting access to the strait, laying naval mines, and demanding toll payments from vessels seeking passage. The U.S. has described these actions as illegal and a threat to global trade.
In response, U.S. forces have already begun military operations in the areas including mine-clearing efforts and increased naval patrols aimed at securing safe navigation for commercial shipping.
Iran, however, has maintained its stance, insisting on its control over the waterway and accusing the United States of escalating the conflict. The latest development raises fears of a broader military confrontation in the Middle East.
Global leaders have expressed concern over the situation, warning that a prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could trigger a spike in oil prices and further destabilize the global economy.
