2027: I’ll Reopen Nigeria’s Land Borders if Elected

Presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) for the 2027 election, Atiku Abubakar, says he will reopen Nigeria’s land borders with neighbouring countries if elected President.

Atiku said the closure of the borders had negatively impacted economic activities and livelihoods, particularly in northern communities bordering Cameroon, Chad, Niger Republic and Benin Republic.

The former Vice President made the declaration on Thursday in Abuja while responding to a request from the Atiku Agenda Support Group, led by Emmanuel Ntekim, during a courtesy visit to his residence.

He said restrictions on cross-border movement and trade had left many Nigerians, particularly young people who depended on legitimate border commerce, struggling financially.

According to Atiku, reopening the borders would restore legitimate cross-border trade, revive businesses and create fresh economic opportunities for communities affected by the restrictions.

He maintained that Nigeria could secure its borders against criminal activities while still allowing legitimate commerce to thrive.

Atiku said his administration, if elected, would pursue policies aimed at expanding economic opportunities and supporting Nigerians whose livelihoods depend on regional trade.
