The Federal High Court has issued a new set of Practice Directions to govern the conduct of pre-election cases, replacing the 2022 guidelines as preparations for the 2027 general elections begin to gather pace.

The new Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions, 2026 was approved by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, John Terhemba Tsoho, with the court saying the revised framework is intended to ensure the speedy, efficient and fair determination of pre-election disputes.

The development was announced in a press release issued on June 29, 2026, and signed by the Director of Information of the Federal High Court, Dr. Catherine Oby Christopher.

According to the statement, the 2026 Practice Directions have formally repealed the Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions, 2022, making the new rules the operative procedural framework for all pre-election matters before the court.

“The Practice Directions is intended to enhance the speedy, efficient, and fair determination of pre-election matters in line with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), the Electoral Act, 2026, and other applicable laws,” the statement read.

The court notified members of the Bar, political parties, litigants and the general public of the new guidelines, urging all stakeholders to acquaint themselves with the provisions.

It also disclosed that copies of the Federal High Court (Pre-Election) Practice Directions, 2026 have been made available to serve as a guide for legal practitioners, political actors and other interested parties.

The issuance of the revised Practice Directions is expected to streamline the handling of pre-election disputes and strengthen judicial efficiency as election-related litigation increases in the lead-up to the 2027 general elections.
