The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has secured a court order mandating the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to publish the names of its candidates for the bye-elections scheduled for August 16, 2025. The bye-elections will hold in various constituencies in 12 states across Nigeria.

In a statement, National Publicity Secretary of the SDP, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, said the court ruled in favour of the party in a suit it filed against INEC for not listing its candidates in the initial publication. Aiyenigba said the court ordered INEC to accept the party’s candidates, publish their names, and ensure they appear on the election materials.

The SDP National Publicity Secretary expressed confidence in the party’s candidates, saying they are set for victory at the polls on Saturday, considering their popularity and massive campaigns. “Notwithstanding the temporary setback occasioned by the wrongful action of INEC against the Party in not listing our candidates, campaigns of the SDP candidates have been in top gear since their emergence in the party primaries, and they are set for victory at the polls on Saturday, considering their popularity and massive campaigns,” Aiyenigba said.

Aiyenigba’s statement highlighted the party’s determination to contest the bye-elections and its confidence in emerging victorious. With the court’s ruling in their favour, SDP candidates will now be on the ballot papers, and voters will have the opportunity to cast their ballots for them.
