Nigerian Sentenced to Life in Prison for Murder of British Woman
A 24-year-old Nigerian, Chukwuemeka Michael Ahanonu, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 21 years and six months for the murder of 56-year-old Nila Patel in a random street attack.
Patel, a mother of two, was attacked after Ahanonu crashed his car while under the influence of cannabis. He proceeded to punch, kick, and stamp on her head, causing severe brain injuries that led to her death two days later.
Ahanonu had pleaded guilty to manslaughter but denied murder, claiming diminished responsibility. However, the jury found him guilty of murder, citing the “most horrific, violent, and random attack” on a kind and loving woman.
The court also heard that Ahanonu was involved in a significant drug-dealing operation, reportedly earning up to £10,000 per month.
The sentencing marks the end of a high-profile case that highlighted both street violence and the dangers of drug-related crimes in the UK.
