Air-Ground Coordination Powers Troops’ Victory Over ISWAP in Borno
Troops of Operation HADIN KAI have successfully repelled a coordinated attack by ISWAP terrorists on a forward operating base in Mandaragirau, Borno State, in an operation that underscores the growing effectiveness of air-ground collaboration in Nigeria’s counterinsurgency efforts.
The early morning assault, which occurred on Saturday, was met with a swift and calculated response from troops of the Joint Task Force (North East), who combined ground ambush tactics with precision air support to neutralise dozens of insurgents.
Military authorities disclosed that the Air Component of Operation HADIN KAI played a decisive role in the engagement, providing close air support and real-time Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance (ISR) that enabled troops to track and target fleeing terrorists along their withdrawal routes.
The coordinated response forced the attackers into a disorganised retreat, during which at least 38 insurgents were neutralised. While eight bodies were recovered at the immediate scene, local intelligence indicated that more than 30 additional casualties were recorded along the Garin Mallum–Garin Gajere axis extending into the notorious Timbuktu Triangle.
Security analysts say the operation highlights a significant shift in Nigeria’s counterterrorism strategy, where the integration of aerial intelligence with ground offensives is increasingly shaping battlefield outcomes.
“This kind of synchronisation between air and land forces is critical in asymmetric warfare,” a security expert noted. “It allows for real-time targeting and reduces the chances of insurgents regrouping after initial contact.”
Troops also recovered several weapons, including AK-47 rifles, magazines, rocket-propelled grenade bombs, and assorted ammunition, further weakening the operational capacity of the террорист group.
Notably, the military recorded no fatalities among its personnel, although one Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle was struck by RPG fire. Injured soldiers were promptly stabilised, according to officials.
The success of the operation has sparked jubilation among local communities, reflecting growing confidence in the military’s ability to protect vulnerable areas in the North East.
Military sources confirmed that follow-up exploitation operations are ongoing to consolidate gains, recover additional equipment, and prevent surviving insurgents from regrouping.
The latest victory reinforces the strategic importance of integrated military operations in the ongoing fight against insurgency, particularly in volatile regions such as the Timbuktu Triangle, long considered a stronghold for terrorist activities.
