At least eight persons have been confirmed dead following a late-night attack by gunmen in Mbwelle village, Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attackers reportedly stormed the community around 11 p.m. on Thursday, opening fire on residents in a sporadic shooting that lasted for nearly an hour. Sources indicate that most of the victims were members of the same family, while at least three others sustained injuries. Several persons are also said to be missing.

Those confirmed dead have been identified as Elder Iliya Mangut Dakus, Mr. Luck Titus Dakus, Mr. Habila Istifanu Dakus, Mr. Hassan Istifanus Dakus, Mrs. Hassan Moses Dakus, Biggie Lucky Dakus, Sunday Gideon Dakus, and Mr. Innocent Barnabas Makwin.

Confirming the incident, Chairman of Bokkos Local Government Area, Samuel Amalau, expressed concern over what he described as a resurgence of unprovoked attacks in the area, particularly Mbwelle community of Kwatas Ward.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, Kefas Mallai, said the attack has heightened tension in the locality. He alleged that the assault lasted for several hours without any visible security presence to repel the attackers.

Mallai described the incident as “a direct assault on our collective humanity and peaceful coexistence,” while extending condolences to the bereaved families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.

Amalau, however, commended security agencies for their ongoing efforts and urged residents to support them with timely and credible information to help prevent further attacks. He also appealed to youths to remain calm and avoid actions that could escalate tensions while reaffirming the right to lawful self-defense.
