Police Rescue 16 Kidnap Victims in Kogi, Neutralise Armed Bandits

The Kogi State Police Command, working with other security agencies, has rescued 16 people abducted along the Itobe–Anyigba highway in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.

The victims, comprising 12 adults and four children, were reportedly kidnapped while travelling along the highway.

Two officers of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) were among those abducted, according to the police.

The victims were rescued during a gun battle between security operatives and the armed attackers, Kogi State Commissioner of Police, Naziru Bello Kankarofi, said while addressing journalists in Lokoja.

According to the police commissioner, security personnel engaged the kidnappers in a fierce exchange of gunfire during the rescue operation, forcing the attackers to abandon their captives and flee.

Kankarofi said the successful operation followed a coordinated response involving the police and other security agencies.

The rescued victims were subsequently taken to safety and are expected to receive medical attention and other necessary support following their ordeal.

One of the rescued victims, Victor Anyichie, recounted the experience, while another survivor, Ngozi Steven, also spoke about the incident.

The police command said efforts were continuing to track down the fleeing suspects and strengthen security along the highway to prevent further attacks.

The Itobe–Anyigba route is an important transport corridor in Kogi State, connecting communities and serving motorists travelling through the area.

The latest rescue comes amid continuing concerns over kidnapping and armed attacks on major highways across parts of Nigeria, with security agencies under pressure to protect motorists and travellers.

The Kogi Police Command urged residents and motorists to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements to security agencies.

Authorities also reaffirmed their commitment to joint operations aimed at dismantling criminal networks and ensuring the safety of residents and travellers across the state.
