INEC Raises Alarm Over Fake X Account, Says Chairman Not Involved
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has debunked reports claiming that its Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan (SAN), made a partisan post on X, insisting that the information is false and deliberately misleading.
In a statement issued in Abuja by the Chairman’s Chief Press Secretary and Media Adviser, Adedayo Oketola, the Commission described the claim as a “baseless fabrication” designed to damage the integrity and neutrality of its leadership.
INEC stressed that the Chairman does not own or operate any personal account on X, and has never engaged in political commentary or aligned with any partisan interest.
According to the Commission, the fake post is part of a coordinated attempt to misinform the public and undermine confidence in the electoral body at a critical time of electoral planning and reform.
The Commission also disclosed that fraudsters have continued to create fake social media accounts in the Chairman’s name to deceive unsuspecting Nigerians, adding that such cases have been reported to security agencies.
INEC said it is working with law enforcement and cyber-intelligence agencies to track down those behind the impersonation and misinformation, warning that offenders will be prosecuted in line with provisions of the Cybercrimes Act.
It urged Nigerians to disregard the false claims and depend only on official INEC communication channels for verified information.
The Commission reaffirmed its resolve to remain focused on its mandate of conducting free, fair, and credible elections, despite attempts to distract or discredit its leadership.
