A suspected motorcycle thief was severely beaten by a mob at the Nnewi automobile market in Anambra State after he was allegedly caught attempting to steal a woman’s motorcycle in a public area.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in broad daylight, drew the attention of traders and passersby who descended on the suspect, subjecting him to a prolonged assault.

Eyewitness footage circulating on social media showed the victim being repeatedly hit, kicked, and dragged on the ground by a group of men using their fists, legs, and other objects.

Amid the attack, some bystanders were heard warning against what they described as “jungle justice,” urging the crowd to hand the suspect over to the police for proper investigation and prosecution.

Others pleaded for leniency, cautioning that the situation could escalate into a fatal outcome.

Despite the appeals, the mob continued the assault until the suspect collapsed and lost consciousness.

After briefly leaving him on the ground, some members of the crowd reportedly resumed the beating upon noticing he was still breathing. He was eventually abandoned at the scene.

The incident has since triggered mixed reactions online. While some social media users justified the mob action as a deterrent against theft, others condemned it as excessive and unlawful.

Critics of the attack stressed the dangers of mob justice, warning that it undermines the rule of law and could lead to wrongful deaths or punishment of innocent individuals.
