Ogun Government Approves N10,000 Transport Relief for Workers and Declares Weekly Day Off
The Ogun State Government has approved a weekly day off duty and a N10,000 monthly transport allowance for public servants in the state as palliative measures to cushion the impact of rising fuel prices and increased cost of living. The initiative, which takes effect from April 2026, will run for an initial period of three months.
The approval was announced in a statement issued by the State Head of Service, Mr. Kehinde Onasanya, who explained that the gesture of government is aimed at further easing the burden on the workforce, who now face increased challenges commuting to work following the recent hike in the pump price of fuel.
Onasanya stated, “Towards providing succour to the teeming workforce of Ogun State in light of the hike in the pump price of fuel in the country and its attendant impact on the cost of transportation and general standard of living, Gov Dapo Abiodun has graciously approved one day off duty in a week for workers in the state. This is in addition to the payment of N10,000.00 special transport allowance as palliatives for three months commencing from April, 2026.”
The Head of Service noted that the initiative is expected to provide meaningful relief in view of the high cost of fuel, while also enhancing service delivery through a more motivated and energised workforce. He described the measure as a necessary response to prevailing economic realities.
However, Onasanya clarified that certain categories of workers would be exempted from the weekly day-off arrangement due to the critical nature of their duties. According to him, “These include medical personnel, judicial officers, teaching and non-teaching staff at all levels of education, security personnel, Accounting Officers, Heads of Departments, as well as other critical duty officers whose presence is indispensable.”
Despite their exemption from the day-off policy, Onasanya confirmed that all affected workers would still benefit from the N10,000 monthly transport allowance.
The Head of Service further explained that Accounting Officers in various Ministries, Departments, and Agencies would determine the specific day off for eligible workers in a manner that ensures service delivery is not compromised and government operations continue without disruption.
Onasanya commended the governor for what he described as a timely intervention and urged workers to reciprocate the gesture with renewed dedication, discipline, and improved efficiency in service delivery. He noted that the measure reflects the commitment of the government to the welfare and well-being of its workforce.
