A British cruise ship passenger is in intensive care after a suspected hantavirus outbreak aboard a vessel in the Atlantic Ocean left three people dead, according to global health authorities.

The outbreak occurred on the MV Hondius, a polar expedition cruise ship operated by Oceanwide Expeditions, which was sailing from Argentina to Cape Verde with about 150 passengers on board.

The World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed at least one case of hantavirus, while five additional infections are suspected. Of the six affected individuals, three have died, including a Dutch couple, while a 69-year-old British passenger remains in critical condition in a hospital in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Health officials say the virus is typically transmitted through contact with urine, droppings, or saliva of infected rodents. Although rare, the disease can cause severe respiratory or kidney complications and has a relatively high fatality rate in serious cases.

Authorities in South Africa confirmed that the British patient tested positive for the virus, while two other symptomatic individuals remain on the ship awaiting possible medical evacuation.

The vessel was reportedly near Cape Verde when the outbreak was identified, but disembarkation has been delayed due to pending authorization from local authorities. Meanwhile, the WHO is coordinating an international response, including medical evacuations, laboratory testing, and epidemiological investigations to determine the source and extent of the outbreak.

Experts say there is currently no specific cure for hantavirus, but early medical intervention can significantly improve survival chances. Investigations are ongoing to determine how the virus spread onboard the ship.
