Davido Pauses Music Career for Two Months to Lead Uncle, Adeleke’s Osun Re-Election Campaign
Nigerian Afrobeats superstar David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has announced a two-month hiatus from his music career to spearhead his uncle Governor Ademola Adeleke’s re-election campaign ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election.
The singer made the announcement on Tuesday in Ede while inaugurating the Imole Youth Campaign Mobilisation Team, a 43-man committee appointed to drive grassroots support for the governor’s second-term bid under the Accord Party. Davido will serve as chairman of the committee, with Adeshina Kayode Olododo as vice chairman and Honourable Gbenga Idowu as secretary. Coordinators have been appointed across the three senatorial districts, nine federal constituencies, all 30 local government areas, and the Modakeke Area Office.

Speaking directly to the youth committee members, Davido explained that his decision to step back from music was driven by personal conviction rather than family obligation. “I have put my musical career on hold for two months to come and work for my uncle, not only because he is my uncle but because I believe in what he is doing and the work ahead,” he said.
The singer emphasised that his uncle’s record in office justified the sacrifice. “Not only because he is my uncle, but because he is doing a good job, and he has major things to do — the job is not done,” Davido added.
He urged committee members to engage in intensive grassroots mobilisation, calling for door-to-door outreach across all local governments. “Let’s do door-to-door mobilisation across all local governments, engaging with people in our communities. Let’s showcase what the governor has done and what he plans to do,” Davido said. “Let’s relate with people in our different communities and connect them with the governor’s work.”
The singer described the youth committee as one of the most important components of the campaign structure. “This is one of the most important committees because it has to do with youth. We are all here to support him to win the election with our influence,” he stated.
Governor Adeleke, who assumed office in 2022, is seeking a second term after switching political platforms from the Peoples Democratic Party to the Accord Party in late 2025. He faces challenges from Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress and Dr Najeem Salaam of the African Democratic Congress.
Davido’s political involvement comes months after he was named Chairman of the Osun Sports Trust Fund in October 2025, a role focused on attracting investment into sports development and infrastructure projects across the state. In December 2025, he formally joined the Accord Party to align politically with his uncle.
The singer has been a vocal supporter of Governor Adeleke since the 2022 governorship election, during which he campaigned both physically and online while criticising alleged electoral malpractices. He used his social media platform to pressure the Independent National Electoral Commission and the late President Muhammadu Buhari not to interfere with election results at the time.
The Osun State electorate will head to the polls on August 15 to elect a governor, with political activities intensifying across the state in recent weeks.
