Former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has formally entered the 2027 presidential race after obtaining the nomination form of the African Democratic Congress, marking one of the most significant developments yet in Nigeria’s emerging opposition realignment.

According to party sources, the nomination form was picked on Amaechi’s behalf by former Edo State Governor and senior ADC figure, John Odigie-Oyegun, at the party’s national headquarters in Abuja.

Political observers say the move immediately positions Amaechi among the front-runners within the ADC and adds fresh momentum to the party’s growing list of presidential contenders ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Amaechi, a long-time political heavyweight, brings a blend of legislative, executive, and federal cabinet experience spanning over two decades. His supporters argue that his entry strengthens the opposition’s competitiveness and broadens its national appeal.

During his tenure as Governor of Rivers State, Amaechi was credited with large-scale infrastructure development, including road networks, educational reforms, and urban renewal projects that reshaped governance in the state.

At the federal level, his service as Minister of Transportation saw the revival of Nigeria’s rail infrastructure, with flagship projects such as the Abuja–Kaduna and Lagos–Ibadan rail corridors widely regarded as key achievements of his tenure.

Analysts say Odigie-Oyegun’s involvement in securing the nomination form underscores growing elite interest in Amaechi’s candidacy and signals possible deeper coalition-building within the ADC.

The development is expected to intensify internal party competition as the ADC continues to attract high-profile aspirants positioning themselves for its presidential primaries.

With Amaechi’s formal entry, the 2027 presidential race is shaping into a multi-actor contest, with opposition parties increasingly consolidating figures with national political experience in a bid to challenge the ruling establishment.
