Bala Mohammed has expressed concern over what he described as the increasing presence of “undemocratic styles” within Nigeria’s democratic system, warning that such actions could undermine public trust and national unity.

The Bauchi State governor made the remarks while speaking at a public event, where he stressed the need for political leaders and institutions to uphold democratic principles, rule of law, and citizens’ rights.

According to him, although Nigeria operates under a democratic framework, certain actions and attitudes by political actors do not reflect the true spirit of democracy.

“We are in a democratic environment with undemocratic styles,” the governor said, noting that intolerance, abuse of power, and disregard for due process remain major concerns in the country’s political space.

Mohammed called on leaders at all levels to embrace transparency, accountability, and inclusiveness in governance, adding that democracy can only thrive when citizens are allowed to freely express themselves and participate in decision-making without intimidation.

The governor also urged Nigerians to remain committed to national development and peaceful coexistence despite political differences. He emphasized that strong democratic institutions are essential for stability and economic progress.

Political observers say the governor’s comments come amid growing debates over governance, political freedom, and the conduct of public officials across the country.

Mohammed further appealed for unity among political stakeholders, warning that actions capable of weakening democratic values could create tension and distrust among citizens.

Nigeria returned to democratic rule in 1999, but concerns over political intolerance, executive overreach, and institutional independence have continued to dominate public discourse in recent years.
