At least 24 people have been confirmed dead following a Russian missile and drone strike that hit a nine-storey apartment building in Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, authorities said.

Emergency services reported that the building, located in a residential district of the city, was heavily damaged during one of the most intense waves of attacks in recent months. Rescue operations are still ongoing as teams continue searching through the rubble for possible survivors and additional victims.

Ukrainian officials said the strike was part of a wider overnight assault that targeted multiple cities across the country, with Kyiv bearing some of the heaviest destruction. Several other residential structures were also damaged, while dozens of people were injured in the capital alone.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the updated death toll, adding that children were among those killed, and described the attack as part of a sustained campaign of aerial bombardment against civilian areas.

Authorities have declared a day of mourning in Kyiv in honour of the victims, as emergency teams continue clearing debris and assessing structural damage to surrounding buildings.
