The bodies of four missing Italian scuba divers have been found in the Maldives, officials confirmed on Monday, bringing a tragic end to a multi-day international search operation in one of the country’s most complex underwater cave systems.

The divers were discovered inside a deep cave in Vaavu Atoll, known locally for its strong currents and extreme depth conditions, after they went missing during a dive expedition last week. According to authorities and international diving rescue teams, the group had been exploring underwater caves at depths of around 50 metres when contact was lost.

An elite team of specialist Finnish cave divers, working with the Divers Alert Network Europe (DAN Europe), located the bodies after several days of challenging recovery efforts hampered by rough sea conditions and limited visibility underwater.

The victims are believed to include experienced divers on a scientific and exploratory mission. One body had previously been recovered shortly after the incident, while the remaining four were found deeper within the cave system during the latest search operation.

Authorities say the tragedy has triggered a wider investigation into the circumstances surrounding the dive, including safety procedures and whether local depth restrictions were followed. The Maldives National Defence Force has also been involved in recovery efforts, which were briefly suspended after a military rescue diver died during operations.

Officials describe the incident as one of the most severe diving accidents in the country’s history, with international rescue teams continuing efforts to recover the bodies from the difficult underwater terrain.
