Jackie, California’s Internet-Famous Bald Eagle, Dies After Weeks-Long Illness

Jackie, the beloved California bald eagle whose life became an online sensation through a 24-hour nest camera, has died after weeks of intensive treatment for a mysterious illness.

Jackie died early Monday at the Ojai Raptor Center, where she had been receiving care after being rescued in July, according to the wildlife rehabilitation centre and reports from multiple US media outlets. She was about 14 years old.

The news has triggered an outpouring of grief among thousands of people who had followed Jackie and her longtime mate, Shadow, through the livestream operated by the nonprofit Friends of Big Bear Valley.

Jackie and Shadow became famous through cameras installed at their nest near Big Bear Lake in Southern California.

The livestream, launched in 2015, allowed viewers around the world to watch the eagles build their nest, incubate eggs, raise eaglets and cope with harsh winter conditions and predators.

Jackie was believed to have been hatched in the Big Bear Valley and later became part of the famous nesting pair.

Jackie’s final chapter began on July 17, when she was found weak and unable to fly after an apparent altercation with younger eagles.

She was rescued and taken to a wildlife rehabilitation facility before being transferred to the Ojai Raptor Center for treatment.

Veterinarians found that she was suffering from severe anaemia and inflammation affecting her kidneys. Despite intensive care, including a blood transfusion and oxygen therapy, her condition remained critical.

Veterinarians conducted extensive tests in an effort to determine what was causing the illness, but the underlying cause remained unclear.

The Ojai Raptor Center said Jackie’s condition deteriorated despite more than three weeks of intensive medical treatment. Her remains have been transferred to the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

The timing of Jackie’s death has made the loss particularly poignant for her followers.

Earlier this year, Jackie and Shadow successfully raised two eaglets, Luna and Sandy, after previous breeding seasons had brought heartbreak.
