Sweden to Acquire Four French Warships in Major Military Expansion

Sweden has announced plans to purchase four advanced navy frigates from France in a deal worth over $4 billion, in a major move aimed at boosting its defence capabilities in the Baltic Sea region.

The agreement, confirmed on Tuesday, will see Sweden acquire the French-made Defence and Intervention (FDI) frigates from defence manufacturer Naval Group, marking one of the country’s largest military investments in decades.

The deal is expected to significantly strengthen Sweden’s maritime defence posture, particularly as tensions remain high in Northern Europe following Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine and Sweden’s recent accession to NATO.

According to officials, the new warships will enhance Sweden’s air defence and anti-submarine capabilities, allowing the navy to better secure key sea routes and support NATO operations in the Baltic region.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said the acquisition represents a “historic upgrade” for the Swedish Navy, noting that the frigates will help protect both military and commercial shipping lanes in increasingly contested waters.

The first of the four vessels is expected to be delivered by 2030, with full operational deployment planned in the years that follow. The ships will also be integrated with Swedish-made systems, including technology developed by defence firm Saab, as part of a wider European defence cooperation strategy.

Military analysts say the move reflects a broader trend among European nations rapidly increasing defence spending and modernising naval forces in response to growing geopolitical uncertainty.

France, which has been actively expanding its defence partnerships across Europe, welcomed the deal as a sign of deepening strategic cooperation between Paris and Stockholm.
