Today is World Biodiversity Day.

The world biodiversity day has again brought to the fore that nothing exists in isolation and everything is in context: what you do, how you do it and who will be affected plays a key role.

In Nigeria, the headlines around the destruction of the ecosystems and biodiversity are difficult to sit with and harder to ignore.

The Kunming- Montreal protocol is a collection to resolve biodiversity preservation challenges not for the sake of it but deliberate in resolving it.

The Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) a historic international agreement adopted by 196 countries to halt and reverse biodiversity loss by 2030. It establishes a comprehensive roadmap with four long-term goals for 2050 and 23 specific, actionable targets for 2030.

Biodiversity (short for biological diversity) is the extraordinary variety of all living things on Earth, including animals, plants, fungi, and microorganisms, as well as the ecosystems they form. It represents the complex web of life that sustains the planet.

It ensures clean air, fresh water, soil fertility, and crop pollination.

Nigeria is committed to the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, having validated its revised National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP 2025–2030) to halt and reverse nature loss by 2030.

Key commitments and targets include. Nigeria is actively engaging the Business Advisory Group to bridge the gap between policy and industry, working to develop a national Business Action Plan that integrates biodiversity goals into corporate and financial practices.

One of the greatest challenge to biodiversity is temperature. For instance the United Kingdom has it’s highest temperatures in may since 2012.

Let’s celebrate the world Biodiversity Day and stop the destruction of our green spaces and other essential environmental species and ecosystems around the country.
