British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced his resignation, triggering a leadership transition within the governing Labour Party and paving the way for Andy Burnham to emerge as the leading contender to replace him.

Starmer made the announcement on Monday after weeks of mounting political pressure following Labour’s poor performance in recent local elections and growing unrest within the party. He said he would remain in office until a successor is chosen, with the process expected to be completed before Parliament returns in September.

In an emotional address outside 10 Downing Street, Starmer thanked his family and supporters, describing his tenure as Prime Minister as the greatest honour of his political career. He also pledged to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of power.

Burnham, the former Mayor of Greater Manchester, confirmed shortly after the announcement that he would seek the Labour leadership. The newly elected Member of Parliament for Makerfield was formally sworn into the House of Commons on Monday, receiving a warm reception from Labour lawmakers.

His candidacy received a major boost when former Health Secretary Wes Streeting announced he would not contest the leadership race and instead endorsed Burnham, urging Labour members to unite behind a single candidate.

Political analysts say the endorsement significantly strengthens Burnham’s position and could result in a swift transition if no serious challenger emerges before nominations open in July.

The resignation marks a dramatic turning point in British politics, ending Starmer’s leadership after less than two years in office. His departure follows months of declining support within the Labour Party, criticism over key policy decisions, and disappointing electoral results that fuelled calls for change at the top.

Opposition parties have already seized on the development. Reform UK leader Nigel Farage renewed calls for an early general election, arguing that any incoming prime minister should seek a fresh mandate from voters.

The Labour Party is expected to begin the formal process of selecting a new leader in July, with a new prime minister potentially in place before Parliament reconvenes in September.
