Military Intelligence Officer Killed in Abuja During Suspected Kidnap Attempt

A serving Nigerian military intelligence officer, Colonel Abdussalam A. Ude, has been killed after allegedly resisting an attempt by armed men to abduct him at his residence in the Kurudu area of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

The incident occurred on Monday evening shortly after the senior officer arrived at his home. Security sources said the attackers ambushed him as he stepped out of his vehicle in what is believed to have been a planned kidnapping operation.

According to the sources, Colonel Ude resisted the attackers despite being outnumbered. The gunmen reportedly opened fire on him at close range after he refused to submit, killing him at the scene.

The attack also left his wife, driver and security guard with gunshot wounds. They were rushed to a hospital and are receiving medical treatment.

Colonel Ude, who hailed from Enugu State, was reportedly due for promotion to the rank of Brigadier General next year. He was described by security sources as a highly respected military intelligence officer who served in several strategic intelligence and counter-terrorism operations.

Before his death, he reportedly participated in military operations against insurgents in the North-East and undertook international intelligence assignments in Chad and France.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the killing, with security agencies working to identify and apprehend those responsible. The motive for the attack is yet to be officially established.

His burial is scheduled to take place in Abuja in accordance with Islamic rites.

The incident has renewed concerns over insecurity in the Federal Capital Territory, particularly attacks targeting serving and retired military personnel.

The killing recalls the June 2024 murder of retired Brigadier General Uwem Harold Udokwere, who was killed after armed men invaded his residence in the Lokogoma area of Abuja.

As of the time of filing this report, the Nigerian military and other security agencies had not issued an official statement on the incident.
