Defence Minister Commends Tinubu for Approving Historic Salary Increase for Armed Forces

The Minister of Defence, Muhammadu Badaru Abubakar, has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for approving a significant salary increase for personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, describing the move as a landmark decision that will boost troop morale and strengthen national security operations.

In a statement issued by the Ministry of Defence, the minister expressed appreciation to the President on behalf of the military establishment, noting that the salary review reflects the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of officers and soldiers serving across the country.

The newly approved salary structure, which takes effect from September 1, 2026, provides increases ranging from 30 to 80 percent, depending on rank. According to the ministry, the package will benefit approximately 250,000 military personnel across the Nigerian Army, Navy and Air Force.

Under the new arrangement, junior personnel from the rank of Private to Staff Sergeant will receive an 80 percent salary increase, while Warrant Officers to Colonels will benefit from a 50 percent increment. Senior military officers are expected to receive a 30 percent pay rise.

The ministry said the revised salary package demonstrates the President’s recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, particularly those deployed to combat insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, oil theft and other security challenges across the country.

According to the minister, the increase in personnel expenditure from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion annually underscores the Federal Government’s resolve to improve the welfare of military personnel while enhancing operational effectiveness.

He described the salary adjustment as a major morale booster that would encourage troops to carry out their constitutional responsibilities with greater dedication, professionalism and commitment.

The minister also urged officers and soldiers to view the improved conditions of service as a renewed call to duty, encouraging them to intensify efforts to combat terrorism, insurgency and other criminal activities threatening Nigeria’s peace and stability.

He reaffirmed the Ministry of Defence’s commitment to supporting President Tinubu’s broader security agenda through the continued modernization of military equipment, investment in technology and improved welfare packages for service personnel and their families.

The salary review is one of the most significant adjustments to military remuneration in recent years and comes as the Federal Government continues efforts to strengthen the country’s security architecture amid persistent security challenges in several parts of Nigeria.

The Defence Ministry expressed confidence that the improved welfare package would further motivate troops and enhance the Armed Forces’ capacity to protect the nation’s territorial integrity and ensure the safety of citizens.
