At least 12 people have been killed and more than 30 others injured after a massive Russian missile and drone attack struck Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, overnight, Ukrainian authorities said.

The attack, which continued into Thursday morning, hit several parts of the city, damaging residential buildings and civilian infrastructure, including a children’s hospital and an educational facility.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said the Solomianskyi district suffered some of the heaviest damage, including the destruction of the upper floors of a nine-storey residential building.

Rescue workers were deployed to search through rubble and assist residents trapped in damaged buildings, while fires broke out at several locations across the capital.

The Ukrainian Emergency Service said the strikes affected multiple sites in Kyiv, with residential structures, warehouses and other facilities damaged.

Reports from Ukrainian officials indicated that the barrage involved ballistic and cruise missiles as well as a large number of attack drones. Ukraine said its air-defence forces intercepted many of the drones and cruise missiles, although the ballistic missiles caused significant damage.

Reuters reported that the strikes also caused power outages affecting tens of thousands of homes in parts of Kyiv, although electricity restoration efforts began shortly afterwards.

Russia’s Defence Ministry said its forces had targeted facilities connected to Ukraine’s defence industry, including drone-component production sites, a military depot and a logistics hub.

However, the attack caused extensive damage in civilian areas, with homes, a school and a children’s medical facility among the sites affected.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the assault and renewed calls for stronger air-defence capabilities, particularly systems capable of intercepting ballistic missiles.

The latest bombardment comes amid a continuing escalation in long-range attacks between Russia and Ukraine, despite ongoing diplomatic efforts aimed at ending the war.

Kyiv authorities said rescue and recovery operations were continuing as emergency workers assessed damaged buildings and searched affected sites.

The death toll could still rise as rescue operations continue and authorities update casualty figures.
