BREAKING: Veteran Journalist Dotun Oladipo Dies at 56

Nigeria’s media industry has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and founder of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, at the age of 56.

Oladipo died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after reportedly taking ill suddenly. Multiple Nigerian media organisations reported his death on Wednesday, with the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), which he formerly led, confirming the development.

Reports from colleagues and close associates indicate that Oladipo had been active earlier in the day before he became unwell at his office. He reportedly attempted to get medical attention but died later at a hospital in Lagos.

Some reports have suggested that he may have suffered a heart attack, but the exact cause of death had not been officially established at the time of publication. The circumstances surrounding his final moments were still emerging, and further details were expected from his family.

Oladipo was a veteran journalist whose career spanned more than two decades and included work in Nigeria’s traditional newspaper and magazine industry before he moved into digital publishing.

He worked with prominent media organisations, including PUNCH Newspapers, where he served as Politics Editor, before establishing The Eagle Online and becoming its publisher and managing editor. His career was marked by the transition from conventional newsrooms to Nigeria’s rapidly expanding digital media space.

Beyond his work as a publisher, Oladipo played a prominent role in the development of organised online publishing in Nigeria.

He was involved in the formative years of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers and was elected its president in 2017. He was subsequently re-elected in 2019 and led the organisation until 2021, when Maureen Chigbo succeeded him.

GOCOP later recognised him as a President Emeritus. Even after leaving the presidency, Oladipo remained active in the guild and continued contributing to initiatives aimed at strengthening professional digital journalism.

In October 2024, Oladipo also became the pioneer president of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), an initiative established to promote collaboration and empowerment among media professionals.

His influence extended beyond publishing and professional leadership. Colleagues described him as a mentor to younger journalists and a strong advocate of digital journalism at a time when online news publishing was transforming the Nigerian media landscape.

The Nigerian media community has continued to pay tribute to the late publisher, with colleagues and professional bodies mourning a journalist who helped bridge the gap between traditional journalism and the digital era.

Oladipo’s death at 56 brings to an abrupt end a career that encompassed political reporting, investigative journalism, newsroom leadership, digital publishing, media entrepreneurship and professional association leadership.
