Nigerian Navy Seeks Greater Local Content in Defence Partnership with Türkiye

The Nigerian Navy is seeking greater localisation in its defence-industrial partnership with Türkiye, with emphasis on indigenous shipbuilding, technology transfer, skills development and local maintenance capability.

The Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas, made this known on Thursday, August 27, 2026, when he received the Deputy Secretary of Defence Industries of Türkiye, Mr Gökhan Uçar, at the Naval Headquarters in Abuja.

The engagement focused on practical opportunities to strengthen Nigeria’s indigenous defence-industrial capacity and support the ongoing modernisation of the Nigerian Navy’s fleet.

According to an official statement signed by the Director of Naval Information, Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the discussions centred on naval shipbuilding, defence technology, technology transfer, local production and capacity development.

The Navy said the partnership was aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s capacity to design, build, maintain and sustain naval platforms locally, thereby reducing dependence on foreign suppliers and enhancing operational readiness.

Abbas stressed the importance of developing local expertise and industrial capacity as part of efforts to build a more sustainable and self-reliant Nigerian Navy.

The discussions also explored opportunities for deeper cooperation with Türkiye in areas that could support the growth of Nigeria’s domestic defence industry while contributing to the modernisation of the Navy’s fleet.

The engagement is part of broader efforts by the Nigerian Navy to expand international defence partnerships while ensuring that such collaborations deliver greater technology transfer, skills acquisition and local industrial benefits to Nigeria.
