INEC Uses Four-State Bye-Elections To Fine-Tune 2027 Electoral Plans

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has identified Saturday’s bye-elections in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states as critical exercises for testing its preparedness ahead of the 2027 General Election.

INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, said the elections provided the commission with an opportunity to assess its logistics, technology and field operations while identifying areas requiring improvement before the 2027 polls.

Amupitan spoke on Saturday while monitoring the elections from INEC’s National Situation Room at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The bye-elections were held in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State; Dawakin Kudu State Constituency of Kano State; Sakwa and Disina State Constituencies of Bauchi State; and Udu State Constituency of Delta State.

The INEC chairman said the commission would not regard any election as too small to provide useful lessons for the conduct of future polls.

“These four bye-elections provide indispensable operational lessons for the Commission as we systematically chart our roadmap toward the 2027 General Election,” Amupitan said.

He said every electoral exercise allowed INEC to evaluate its preparedness, particularly in the areas of logistics, technological deployment and administrative coordination.

“We must resist the temptation to view any exercise as merely an ordinary bye-election. Every election is a critical component of our broader preparations for the 2027 General Election, allowing us to continuously audit our logistics framework, stress-test our technological deployment, and evaluate administrative field readiness,” he said.

Amupitan, alongside national commissioners and senior management officials, monitored reports from the four states as election activities progressed.

He said the commission had also identified and resolved administrative and operational challenges before polling commenced, stressing that the Situation Room was designed to facilitate rapid intervention when problems emerged.

“Our primary mandate in the Situation Room is monitoring and proactive crisis resolution,” he said.

“Whatever administrative or field challenges arose before the day of the elections, the Commission was able to nip them in the bud effectively. We remain committed to refining our processes so that every subsequent exercise reflects higher standards of efficiency and public confidence.”

The chairman commended the technical team and other officials who participated in the monitoring exercise, saying their efforts enabled the commission to track developments across the four states and assess its field performance.

The commission is expected to incorporate lessons from the bye-elections into its continuing preparations for the 2027 General Election.
