TCN, Imcomtel Ready 200MVA Transformer Installation At Katsina Substation

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) and Imcomtel Engineering Limited have completed a readiness assessment of the Katsina 330/132/33kV Transmission Substation ahead of the installation of two 100MVA power transformers that are expected to strengthen electricity transmission across the North-West.

The joint inspection, conducted on Thursday, September 24, 2026, focused on the readiness of the project site, ongoing civil works and supporting infrastructure for the next major phase of the transmission project.

The TCN delegation was led by the Assistant General Manager, Transmission, Katsina Sub-Region, Engr. Usman Idris, while Imcomtel Engineering Limited was represented by a team led by Engr. Emmanuel Okafor.

A key component of the inspection was the assessment of two 100MVA transformers delivered to the substation on July 9, 2026.

The teams examined the transformers and their designated plinths to ensure that the site was adequately prepared for installation and associated works.

The additional 200MVA capacity is expected to enhance the transmission capability of the substation and improve the movement of electricity within Katsina State and other parts of the North-West.

Beyond the transformers, the inspection covered four newly delivered control rooms earmarked for critical protection, monitoring and control systems.

Engineers assessed the rooms and associated infrastructure to determine whether they meet the requirements for the equipment and systems that will support operation of the upgraded substation.

The inspection also covered ongoing civil works and equipment locations, allowing both teams to review outstanding requirements before the project advances to the installation stage.

At the conclusion of the exercise, TCN and Imcomtel agreed on the final technical specifications and site preparations required to facilitate the installation process and ensure effective coordination between the project teams.

The development represents another step towards completing the Katsina transmission project, which is expected to increase network capacity and strengthen the electricity infrastructure serving the region.

The project is particularly significant for the North-West, where transmission capacity and network reliability remain important considerations in efforts to improve electricity supply.

The inspection team included TCN’s Principal Manager, Engr. Mustapha Idowu, as well as heads of relevant technical departments.

With the major transformers already delivered to site and the control rooms also in place, attention has now shifted to final preparations for installation and the completion of other works required before the substation becomes fully operational.
