AFCON 2027 Qualifier: Guinea-Bissau Obliterated The Super Eagles — Now Nigeria Must Look in The Mirror

𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐀-𝐁𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐔 𝟑–𝟎 𝐍𝐈𝐆𝐄𝐑𝐈𝐀

Nigeria did not merely lose in Bissau.

They were 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐝, 𝐨𝐮𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐝 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 by a Guinea-Bissau side that showed greater urgency, sharper movement and more conviction from the opening whistle.

𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐮𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐨 𝐃𝐣𝐮 opened the scoring in the 𝟏𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐭𝐞, 𝐌𝐚𝐦𝐚 𝐁𝐚𝐥𝐝𝐞 doubled the lead in the 𝟔𝟔𝐭𝐡, and 𝐀𝐥𝐯𝐚𝐫𝐨 𝐃𝐣𝐚𝐥𝐨 completed the rout in 𝟗𝟎+𝟓.

Nigeria finished with 𝟓𝟓% 𝐩𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧. Both teams recorded 𝟏𝟐 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐬. Nigeria put five on target; Guinea-Bissau put seven on target.

The numbers tell part of the story.

The eyes told the rest.

Nigeria were flat-footed, slow to second balls and uncertain in possession. Guinea-Bissau played with greater urgency, sharper movement and more conviction. Too often, the Super Eagles struggled to sustain passing combinations. When they entered the final third, promising situations disappeared through hesitation, poor passes and indecision.

This was not simply about losing.

𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐭.

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐍𝐆𝐈𝐍𝐄 𝐑𝐎𝐎𝐌 𝐍𝐄𝐕𝐄𝐑 𝐓𝐎𝐎𝐊 𝐂𝐎𝐍𝐓𝐑𝐎𝐋

The midfield is the engine room of a football team.

Against Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria’s engine never consistently took control.

Wilfred Ndidi struggled to impose the authority Nigeria needed from its captain. Alex Iwobi had useful moments and tried to connect play, but as a unit Nigeria lacked rhythm, control and penetration.

That problem travelled forward.

Taiwo Awoniyi and Akor Adams struggled to influence the first half. Eric Chelle reacted at halftime by introducing Moses Simon and Moses Usor, but although Nigeria showed moments of improvement, the central problem remained.

The Super Eagles repeatedly reached dangerous areas without enough conviction.

Wrong pass.

Delayed pass.

Another touch.

Another hesitation.

𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐠𝐨𝐧𝐞.

Against Madagascar four days earlier, Nigeria produced 𝟐𝟐 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐭𝐬 and scored twice — a conversion rate of approximately 𝟗.𝟏%.

Against Guinea-Bissau, Nigeria again had possession and attempts.

This time, there were no goals.

𝐏𝐨𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐧 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐜𝐡𝐞𝐬. 𝐆𝐨𝐚𝐥𝐬 𝐝𝐨.

𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄𝐁𝐀𝐂𝐊𝐒 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐁𝐄𝐂𝐎𝐌𝐄 𝐀 𝐒𝐓𝐑𝐀𝐓𝐄𝐆𝐘

Nigeria conceded first for the second consecutive qualifier.

They recovered against Madagascar.

They did not recover in Bissau.

Conceding first changes a match. The opponent can protect space, choose when to counter and force Nigeria to spend additional physical and emotional energy repairing damage that should have been prevented.

𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐮𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐫𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲.

There will be days when a comeback comes.

There will also be days like Bissau.

𝐂𝐇𝐄𝐋𝐋𝐄 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐀𝐍𝐒𝐖𝐄𝐑 — 𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐒𝐎 𝐌𝐔𝐒𝐓 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑𝐒

Eric Chelle is the head coach. The result ultimately lands on his desk.

Questions about selection, formation, preparation and substitutions are legitimate.

But accountability must be intelligent.

A coach cannot make a five-yard pass from the technical area. He cannot take the shot. He cannot control a poor first touch. He cannot win a second ball for a player.

𝐓𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐮𝐭 𝐚 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐜𝐞. 𝐄𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐬 𝐧𝐞𝐱𝐭.

The coach must answer for the plan.

The players must answer for the execution.

𝐖𝐄 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐁𝐄 𝐀𝐍𝐆𝐑𝐘 — 𝐖𝐈𝐓𝐇𝐎𝐔𝐓 𝐀𝐁𝐔𝐒𝐈𝐍𝐆 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐋𝐀𝐘𝐄𝐑𝐒

Every Nigerian supporter has a right to be angry.

Former players. Administrators. Journalists. Coaches. Supporters who have never played professional football.

A 3–0 defeat demands questions.

But as a former international, I understand something else.

No player puts on the Nigerian jersey and walks onto the field intending to lose.

Football can humble you.

Before I condemn another player, I ask myself: Have I ever lost? Have I ever had a poor game? Have I ever walked off a field knowing my performance was nowhere near what I intended?

If the answer to even one is yes, criticism should come with perspective.

That does not mean shielding anyone from accountability.

It means understanding the difference between criticism and abuse.

Those of us who played should help supporters understand how unforgiving football can be, just as people from other professions can educate us about realities they know better than we do.

𝐃𝐎 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐁𝐄 𝐅𝐎𝐎𝐋𝐄𝐃 𝐁𝐘 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐍𝐀𝐌𝐄 “𝐆𝐔𝐈𝐍𝐄𝐀-𝐁𝐈𝐒𝐒𝐀𝐔”

Some Nigerians hear “Guinea-Bissau” and assume Nigeria should simply show up and win.

Modern football does not work that way.

Look at some of the players Nigeria faced:

* Franculino Djú — Trabzonspor, Turkey

* Mama Baldé — Brest, France

* Beto — Fiorentina, Italy

* Renato Nhaga — Galatasaray, Turkey

* Víctor Rofino — Famalicão, Portugal

* Opa Sanganté — Dunkerque, France

* Ronaldo Vieira — San Jose Earthquakes, United States

* Jefferson Encada — Estrela da Amadora, Portugal

* Fernando Embadje — CD Lugo, Spain

These are professional footballers operating in established football environments.

But Nigeria’s players also compete abroad.

So that cannot become an excuse.

The lesson is different:

𝐀 𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐚𝐝𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐬 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐭𝐛𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 𝐛𝐞𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫.

That is why Nigeria must continue identifying and genuinely considering its best home-based players.

The questions should remain simple:

Can he play? Can he compete? Can he help Nigeria?

𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐏𝐈𝐓𝐂𝐇 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐏𝐎𝐎𝐑 — 𝐁𝐔𝐓 𝐈𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐍𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐁𝐄 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐄𝐗𝐂𝐔𝐒𝐄

Concerns about the Estádio 24 de Setembro surface existed before kickoff. Heavy rain had left it saturated and uneven.

CAF should answer questions about allowing an important international qualifier to be played on such a surface.

But both teams played on it.

Guinea-Bissau adapted.

Nigeria did not.

𝐀 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐜𝐡 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐩𝐨𝐨𝐫 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐡 𝐛𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐞.

𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄 𝐃𝐎 𝐖𝐄 𝐆𝐎 𝐅𝐑𝐎𝐌 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐄?

Now the qualification pressure is real.

Tanzania are already qualified as one of the AFCON 2027 co-hosts. That leaves Nigeria, Guinea-Bissau and Madagascar fighting for the additional qualifying place from the group.

Guinea-Bissau have six points.

Nigeria have three.

The campaign is not over.

But the warning could hardly be louder.

Nigeria must improve the mentality.

The midfield must control games.

The passing must become cleaner.

Final-third decisions must become braver.

The players must execute.

The coach must find answers.

And everybody involved must confront one uncomfortable truth.

𝐈𝐧 𝐁𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐚𝐮, 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚 𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐮𝐧𝐥𝐮𝐜𝐤𝐲.
