Tragedy in Pakistan as School Roof Collapse Kills 28 Children
A school roof collapse in northwestern Pakistan has killed at least 29 people, including 28 students and a female teacher, after a section of the building gave way during classes in the city of Peshawar on Thursday, October 15, 2026.
The incident occurred at Al-Khair School in the Afridi Abad area of Peshawar, the capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, trapping students beneath the debris and prompting an emergency rescue operation.
According to local media reports, the roof of an upper floor collapsed onto classrooms below, causing sections of the building to give way. Many of the children killed were between seven and 16 years old.
Rescue workers, police officers and local residents rushed to the scene to search for trapped pupils and evacuate the injured. The narrow streets surrounding the school reportedly complicated access to the site for emergency responders.
Lady Reading Hospital declared an emergency to accommodate casualties, while injured victims were taken to medical facilities for treatment.
Authorities later said rescue operations had concluded after workers cleared the debris and confirmed that no more injured children remained at the scene. Reports indicated that at least 19 people were injured, although casualty figures varied across initial reports.
The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about building safety and the enforcement of construction standards in Pakistan, where similar incidents have previously claimed lives.
Peshawar police said the school’s owner had been arrested and an investigation launched into the circumstances surrounding the collapse. Initial statements from officials pointed to a weak building structure and an overloaded roof, although the investigation is expected to establish the precise cause.
The disaster sparked grief and anger among families and residents, with relatives demanding accountability and stronger safeguards to prevent unsafe buildings from being used as educational facilities.
Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed sorrow over the incident and offered condolences to the bereaved families, while authorities called for assistance for the injured and a thorough investigation.
The collapse has renewed calls for stricter inspections of school buildings and stronger enforcement of safety regulations to protect students and teachers from preventable disasters.
