Nine people, including two children, have died following a shooting and hours-long police standoff in Erie, Pennsylvania, with authorities confirming that the suspected gunman was also found dead.

The shooting occurred on Friday evening, October 9, in the 700 block of Perry Street, on the city’s east side. Police responded at about 5 p.m. after receiving reports of gunfire and a man allegedly shooting outside a residence before entering the house. Two women were found dead in the street, while additional victims were discovered inside the property. The reported total of nine deaths includes the suspected shooter, according to local reports.

The incident developed into a standoff as Erie police officers and a tactical team surrounded the residence and called on the suspect to surrender. Additional gunshots were heard during the confrontation. When officers entered the house, they found more victims, including children, and the suspected shooter dead from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to police reports.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the scene as one of the most difficult and heartbreaking incidents he had encountered during his more than 28 years in law enforcement.

Lorah said the circumstances were deeply disturbing and expressed sympathy for the victims, their relatives and others affected by the tragedy. He also said investigators were working to establish the full circumstances of the shooting and would not speculate about a motive while the investigation continued.

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro said he had offered his administration’s full support to Erie Mayor Daria Devlin following the killings. He expressed condolences to the affected families and the wider community as authorities began investigating the incident.

City officials said the situation had been contained and that there was no continuing threat to the public. Investigators are continuing to examine the scene and piece together what happened inside and outside the residence.

The killings have shaken the Erie community, with the police chief describing the loss of life as devastating. Further details are expected as investigators release verified information about the victims and the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
